It's still very early in the CKP era and there are a ton of question marks that still need to be answered, but what are your early expectations for Coach Kenny Payne?

Lol the coach hasn't even introduced his staff let alone still hasnt Put a team together. We have a ways to go as they say let the cake bake more like let him put the ingredients together first.

I expect excellent recruiting - the likes of which have never been seen at UofL. I further expect that all those former players and civic leaders that campaigned for him so loudly to stay engaged with the program and provide tangible assistance and benefits.

Too soon to look at it we need 6 to 9 players and we have no clue who they are.

I'm giving a ton of patience he inherited a program in shambles with a gutted roster coming off 19 losses with NCAA still waiting to screw us again.

The flip side of saying this is that there are a lot of people invested in KP not failing. There are a lot of important people out in the world that want him to succeed and that is a force in our favor.

One thing to keep in mind that's out of our control - the Selection Committee.

It's currently run by UK.

And, the last 2 times we had bubble teams (Padgett and that 1 Mack team) they kept us out when we deserved it.

So I'm not holding my breath that we'll ever get in as a bubble team as long as UK is running the SC. And I won't hold it against Payne if he has the credentials for a bubble team but gets denied by the dirty politics and corruption of the NCAA.

I certainly hope that is the case but, you just never know. Advocating is the easy part - following through takes sustained effort. Or more simply - Money talks and bullshit takes the bus.

We’ll know soon enough whether those individuals are more than just talk.

I'll call it a prediction rather than an expectation...

If Payne has the coaching ability he needs to be successful here, he should have a winning season next year and make the NIT. A surprise on the upside is if we're considered to be a bubble NCAA team.

I don't think there's a realistic shot he gets this team into the NCAA tourney. Too much ground to cover in one year...

And yet we decided that Padgett didn’t deserve a chance for basically doing the same thing.. I guess our expectations have been tempered.

Can’t make any prediction or have any real expectation until roster and staff are established.

What I think will happen is probably completely different than what actually happens. I think 1 year transfers are going to be tough to get. Multi year transfers/high school players are more realistic.

The good news is this isn’t college football. They land legit perimeter players (PG-SG) my opinion changes. Wheeler comes back or they land a big out of portal that would be big. That is just 3 players.

It will be interesting.

The best thing we can all do is let the man do his job! So far, I like what I see! I’m sure we have all had new bosses or were the boss and hired someone whom we had high expectations in their positions. Some make it because of the support from their peers. Others do not for one reason or another. The basketball world thinks highly of KP. In his acceptance speech, he spoke of not always being at home when his children were younger. He was working his tail off! KP is a hard worker with admiration from many.
I believe this is gonna be a fun ride! Onward and Upward CKP and CNS!

I was OK with Padgett getting more rope in 2018, although he probably walked into a better overall situation than Payne is walking into now...

Looking back on it, knowing what we know now, we probably would have been better off with Padgett during this "purgatory" period (at least financially). Had Mack known this cloud would not be resolved until his 5th year (with penalties extending beyond that), he probably wouldn't have come. The whole thing just wore him out. As the Pitino players graduated/moved on, his job got harder and harder.

Before anyone puts words in my mouth that I didn't actually say - I am not saying Chris Mack was the greatest coach ever and giving him excuses. But the situation was pretty impossible, hence my statement regarding Padgett. I like Padgett a lot, I don't know if there's enough money in the world to make up for what he would have had to deal with, so maybe it's a good thing we didn't keep him.

I hate bringing up old news . Some of you fail too realize or maybe just did not know. That Padgett was also named in the infractions and his involvement was not minimal. We could not have anyone associated from that crap still around. And besides you have to be freaking crazy to want Padgett over KP not even a discussion cannot even get any tangible jobs he 's a good guy appreciate him but no. Some ofour fanbase is still stuck in this Rick/Jurich era . It's a new brand being built from the ground up again embrace it and enjoy. Or find another team to root for! Have never seen this fanbase so divided and scared too move on .

I did not know this. Padgett was named? What did it say about him?
He wasn’t named at all - that’s completely incorrect - like a lot that comes from the person who posted it. He had been part of the staff since 2014 and so there were of course questions about “what did he know?” but, that’s as far as it went.

UofL wouldn’t have named him interim coach if he’d been named - beyond silly to suggest that they would have. They would have fired him just like they did Pitino, Johnson, etc.

1. Complete bullsh@& regarding Padgett being “named”.
2. Poster didn’t say anything about wanting Padgett over Payne - or really did he even compare the two - with the exception of circumstances related to the position.
3. It makes complete sense that fans would look back fondly at the most successful period of UofL athletics and credit those responsible - particularly given what a sh$% show it’s been since they left.
4. So that no one forgets - while 99.9% of posters said that they’d support KP if he was hired - regardless of whether or not he was their first choice - YOU were the only one here who said that you’d stop being a Cardinal fan if they didn’t hire KP.

RedFist - This is a pretty serious allegation that is supported by nothing. I reread the current Amended NOA, and Padgett is not listed as an "involved individual" (those being Fair, Johnson, Pitino, and now Mack), nor is he listed anywhere in the document. The only references that there is anywhere concerning Padgett in this whole affair are his text response to Pitino's question asking who is Bowen after he re-opened his recruitment; Padget's response: "The top-ranked remaining open recruit" suggests nothing more than a direct response to the question. There's no reason to throw any shade on Padgett over this affair.

Agree 100%. It makes no logical sense that we'd have Padgett coach the team if he were even remotely implicated. Padgett was a good guy who stepped into a bad situation and helped us through a really bad time. I hate to see anyone denigrating him.

My expectations at this point are that Kenny will win somewhere between 3 and 22 games in his first regular season as a head coach.

Like others have said, let me see what the roster looks like. Half our guys are in the portal. He needs, because this is what's been heavily promoted, a big time recruit.

He knew about some issues and admitted it after being questioned. He wasn't accused as being a part of the actual wrongdoing. He was on staff and bascially had to tell the truth somewhat.
Lol - what a complete crock. You don't know anything and yet you post that he was "named" and then when called out on your bullshit you backpedal and post this vague word salad. The only truthful thing in any of your posts is that Padgett was on the staff.

I used to be able to tolerate your posts somewhat but in the last few months you've turned into a complete scrub.

Consider the (scrubby) source is all I can say...

At this point multiple opportunities have been presented for a retraction or providing any proof of these statements against Padgett. So far, nothing. I consider myself to be open-minded and I'm willing to change my mind if someone presents a substantive argument, but I see no signs of that here.

This is literally the first time I've seen someone go out of their way to besmirch Padgett on the message boards. I just don't understand it. I thought Padgett was pretty much universally loved/respected for what he did to help us in a pinch.

You have to wonder what is the motivation for doing a hatchet job on a guy like Padgett.

It’s justification for not giving CDP the permanent HC position and for hiring you know who. Now, if we didn’t still have the NCAA cloud hanging over our heads at the time, it made sense but what we did was give the former coach a pay check for failing.. Plus we gave him an excuse. He can always say he was in a bad situation.
