Wonder if Johnson Will Consider NBA

I think he will at least consider it and try to get as much information as possible. The world is so uncertain right now that we don't know how it will affect decisions either way.

I don't recall exactly when the deadline is. But in a decision like this, I would start to handicap the possibility there will be no college basketball season next year. As extreme as that sounds, all it would take is a couple of major disappointments...
  • The virus isn't impacted by environmental temp.
  • A medical treatment isn't as effective as needed.
Sports make a helluva lotta money, but they're pretty low in the necessity hierarchy. If bringing thousands of people together in one place is considered an ongoing risk, it jeopardizes recreational events for the foreseeable future.

Bringing this back to Johnson and other prospects, they're in reality making a decision that may encompass more than one year.

In my sports disaster scenario, however, it's similarly possible that NBA teams take a pass on their upcoming draft picks. The Draft will still be held. But if there's a real possibility that there's not an NBA season next year, why draft new players that you have to sign and pay?...

Saw one listing that had him going at #46, late 2nd round. This same listing had Nwora dropping down to #43...
Im not worried whatsoever about Johnson he has no consistent jumpshot or ft let alone his body is still not conditioned for the college game. And a side note another NBA draft site has Nwora the first pick of the second round. So nothing is really correct. But i stand by Johnson returning .

It is humorous thinking D. Johnson could go pro right now.

He has the potential but shoots poorly and is not a good defender yet.

His size and play making are there, but so are turnovers

As far as there being no college ball next year, there would also be no NBA next year. The owners would not want to sign players and pay them if there is no mechanism to get a return.

Agents are not going to foot the bill, so any player announcing is going to be an unpaid athlete. Perhaps endorsement money is an option. But that will only be for the top rookie players.

Not necessarily. Pro leagues have more options and money to make some sort of competition happen. Colleges will play it safe and have decisions made for them. College athletes are STUDENT-athletes.

There's going to be a lot more than back-to-normal developments on the other end of this societal shutdown. Quickly back to normal would be an optimistic outcome at this point...

If a team wants to pay DJ a 2-3 year guaranteed contract to play basketball, he should at least consider it right?

I don’t think he’s ready and 1 more year will be great for his stock, but if a team thinks he just needs to work on his jumper and will still invest, he’d be paid money to focus solely on basketball.

A guaranteed contract is different than just being some G League guy. You’re playing basketball every day and don’t have to go to class, oh and you’re being paid. People act like coming back to college is the only way to improve, it’s not.

But DJ loves the Ville and I bet thinks 1 more year and he can get first round money.

Nope. No team is drafting, signing and paying a player drafted on potential and then burning a year of the contract.

If the virus is not contained/lessened this draft will be more for ready to play players.

That doesn’t mean kids won’t go pro. Just that more will be looking for free agent contracts.

These kids increasingly don’t care if they get drafted. They don’t wanna waste time waiting to be paid...

Last year roughly 90 early entrants for roughly 60 spots, excluding foreign players and SRs.

VJ King threw his hat in there.

As time passes, the jump decision takes a lower and lower bar...

If teams find David good enough to go pro, he will have an offer on the table. If there are things he needs to work on, NBA teams will know that and know they can sign him and let him work on his game under contract for them.

Some kids it’s a debate about if they even look like they will ever be a pro and need to prove it, but others are good enough and have the intangibles.

With DJ, the stock shows he is a pro prospect. We all say “he’ll be a first rounder next year” so that means we know in a year he will be MUCH better. An NBA scout can see those things too and may think that they could get a steal on him a year early.

The market and feedback will determine his worth. Teams will let him know he’s ready if they’re willing to invest. Just because a rookie won’t start or play immediately, doesn’t mean a team won’t spend money to develop them over a year or 2.

DJ will be a STEAL of any team could get him now, but I’m thinking he’s too far late in the 2nd round and will be back. But you just never know as money talks louder than college fans.

According to a Coach Mack online interview today,

Malik Williams has asked the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee for feedback but isn't putting his name in the draft. No one else, including David Johnson, is pursuing the NBA route at all, Mack says.
Didn't understand why anybody would think Dj was anyway. He was nowhere ready.

I wonder what dreamland most fans live in.

D. Johnson is going to be great. But today is not the day.

Does that mean he won’t be great next year? I’m thinking 1st team AA. Especially now since he can really be dynamic off the ball and on the ball with the grad transfer we just received.

To be honest, nobody is really ready for the NBA other than a Zion Williamson, Carmelo, Anthony Davis type.

Don was 1st team All ACC, but many people thought in Card he wasn’t ready because he didn’t dominate and carry us like we thought he could. Everyone said 1 more year of Don and he’d be a top 5 pick. Heck, he didn’t need the money people said because his dad had MLB money from the Mets.

Well, the Jazz knew that Don was good enough and that 1 year of college wouldn’t make a difference. He gets there and has better training and coaches, playing against better competition, and no classes. Boom, he becomes the star player on an NBA playoff team in his rookie year.

Don at UofL at the end wasn’t an NBA ready superstar, but he had the makings to be one. If you’re good enough, you’re good enough.

I think DJ needs to show more of an ability to shoot, but say 1 NBA team thinks he’s good enough and their trainers can work on the shot with him, maybe he should listen.

But he will be here and be back. Unlike Scrubb, I don’t think DJ has peaked. Scrubb was a hot name after his team USA camp work and a great freshman year. He cooled off this year. He’s been scouted plenty, his stock may be as high as it will be. Similar to Nwora. The scouts had 2 years of college film and he played on the elite all star circuits and camps as a Senior. He was a known commodity.

DJ wasn’t a burger boy. He didn’t go to the top camps. He won’t get to have NBA workouts. His stock can only go up. That’s why I’d advise him to come back.

The topic is about a player making a decision to enter or not enter the draft during the off season.... not about if fans think the player is NBA ready right now. Data in prior drafts show countless early entrant players going undrafted we are all glad DJ didnt put his hat in the ring for that potential outcome.

Dreamland/humorous examples. Vj King. Jaylen Johnson. Etc. There are FR every year that go undrafted or late 2nd round.

You make some really good points also these teams are drafting based on potential and what they think their system and staff can do for the players games. Like you said unless you’re a can’t miss sure fire player the rest of these guys are getting drafted because they have the “potential” to bloom into something much better then what they come into the league as. That’s the intrigue with DJ.
