Will Gardner to transfer

I understand is situation but I will hate to see him go, I liked the kid he has class. I will try to keep up with him and always root for him, I also hope he goes to WKU.

Guess he was healthy enough to play this year. Don't understand Petrino's rationale in not playing him. In any event, he sure seems like a good kid and I hope he lights it up (and no injuries) wherever he lands.

He would have been a sitting duck in field with 100 guns on im. No way he would have survived with that o-line he has no mobilty .

I hope he's wherever Jeff Brohm is. :)

Best of luck to him!

And as aggravated as I've been with CBP, I have to give him props for not playing him this year and giving him an opportunity.

I wish Will nothing but success wherever he decides to transfer, and of course, success in life.

Give em hell Will!!

Per his mother via Facebook, Will Gardner has been granted his release and will transfer from Louisville.

Best Wishes to a guy that was pure class and represented the Unversity well.

I hate to see Will's career end this way. As poorly as our other QB's have performed this year, why wasn't he playing?

First of all, the QB's didn't play poorly. The offensive line did and that placed a ton of pressure on the QB's.

Will didn't play because he is not mobile enough to make up for the poor offensive line play. He would have been killed back there. He is a true pocket passer who needs line protection and this O-line just wasn't up to the task this year. The O-line improved some as the year went on, but Will had no chance to shine because of that weakness.

Gardner was our best QB but the injuries kept him sidelined. Hopefully he can stay healthy at his new school, have a great season and get a shot at a pro career.

As I said earlier, if I were betting, I'd bet this was the plan and CBP was ok with it.

By the time Will was ready to play, the die was set for this year. And probably for the next three.

So Will asked not to play, and CBP honored it so Will could have a year someplace else.

OR, CBP told him he wasn't playing, that he would keep him on scholly, and he could transfer at years end.

Either or, CBP did the kid a favor, and both sides are happy with it.

There's no dicernable difference in WG's and KB's mobility. The risk of another injury doesn't lessen (excepting for the factor of time) with the transfer to another school - if you recall, the last injury came when he went to step into a throw and not the result of a hit.

Furthermore, if WG didn't want to play - a deal made with BP as has been suggested - then why was he fully geared up every week in the sideline?

I respectfully disagree. Bolin is more mobile than Gardner IMO but Gardner has a much stronger arm. None were/are as mobile as Jackson, and his ability to make a play once the offensive line broke down is why he ended up being the best option this year.

As far as some type of deal being made with coach and Will is something that could have happened, but it's hard to understand since he was in full pads like you pointed out.

You're right - I guess I was comparing KB and WG within the spectrum of Lamar's mobility.

The whole thing is just odd to me. With the yearlong unsettled mess that was the QB position, you would think that if WG was healthy - and interested - he would have gotten the nod over KB when Petrino went in that direction.

Oh well - doesn't matter now.

I don't know of course and was only suggesting that there was a "deal", but the sideline is full of RS players every game. They're part of the team, but they don't get burned (play).

This would have been WG last shot, and I don't playing a few downs here or there is something CBP would do to him. Not the kinder, gentler CBP anyway. ;)

He let him sit out, and now he can go somewhere and have a chance to start every game.

Something he'd have NEVER done here this year. Or next.

Just out of curiosity - why do you say never? You don't think (if healthy) he would have gotten the nod over Bolin?

Any updates on where Will is going to transfer ? (I heard that Tyler Ferguson was enrolled at WKU)

It's just MHO

I'd have liked to see him get a chance again.

But you tell me, with the rotation and type of offense we ran this year, do you think he would have?

Will was never fast and now after three surgeries ?

I don't see a spot for him. Especially if we get Pass.

Oh, I totally agree moving forward - he was (one of the) odd men out. I think that had he been 100% healthy / knee rehabbed at the beginning of the season - he would have been the starter. Provided he did not get injured again, I think that he would have played well and that would have perhaps eliminated the revolving door at that position. I really think that BP installed some read option to try his best to fit LJ's skill set this year.

Hopefully, they can coach LJ up on the off season so that he's more comfortable under center, understands the traditional portions of Petrino's offense better allowing him to get thru progressions quicker and then come back next year and utilize him (or J Pass) in the same sort of way that Clemson features Deshaun Watson.

Pass will be starting QB in Petrinos offense

I think that you're right - just not sure it will be next year. He is a real talent but from what I've seen of him on film, he could use a redshirt year to learn the offense and polish his throwing mechanics.

Interesting to see the lack of respect Jackson gets from many of our fans. Kid was a true freshmen and damned impressive this year while playing behind a really bad O-line. He is our starter and was our best option all year. Jackson never looked half as bad as Bolin looked against UK. To be short and sweet about it, Kyle should never play another snap unless it's mop-up time or due to an injury to our first and second string guy. Will might have been good at one time, but there's no way to play him after three knee surgeries. Great kid and I wish him well.

uk must have been the only game you saw.

Sure wasn't. I watched every tick of every game. Aside from Bolin's pinch-hitting effort against Houston, which was largely due to the fact their D prepared all week for Jackson and the read option, I couldn't name a single game where Bolin felt like the better option. Not to trash Kyle, but Lamar is the guy. He brought us back against Auburn, Pitt and UK. He played well against FSU and struggled against very good defenses in Wake and BC while still managing the game well enough to win. In terms of talent and the future, I think even the most ardent KB supporters would have to acknowledge that Lamar is our guy. The funny thing about most KB supporters is that they generally point to Lamar's "freshmen mistakes" while Kyle is a human turnover machine. I hate blasting our own guy because he's been a valuable teammate and productive player, but the typical analysis by most of our fans on this is just wrong.

Where do you see lack of respect for LJ? There have been discussions regarding what is the best offense for Louisville moving forward but, I don't think anyone was disrespectful of LJ or his abilities.

If anything, you've been far more disrespectful towards Bolin in this post than anyone has been toward LJ.

I guess the disrespect I reference is more about the rumbling in this thread of Gardener not getting a shot and one poster mentioned how our QB's struggled all year. I guess I didn't think LJ struggled all that mightily for a freshmen playing behind one of the worst O-lines in Power 5 football (yes, it really was that bad). In fact, I saw a lot to like about his game....so much so that I never once wished Gardener would get a shot after three knee operations (no disrespect to the kid). Bolin plays hard and deserves respect, but he isn't in LJ's league.

Again, the questions about why WG didn't get an opportunity (I was the one who posed that question) was more of an extension of the larger conversation about the direction of the offense.

Your comment that KB isn't in LJ's league really is dependant on the system being utilized. Bolin does not have the physical tools to play the read option at this level. With that said, he is significantly better at this point than Jackson in running Petrino's traditional offense. That's where all of the indecision and switching came from this year IMO.

I hope LJ uses the extra practices to work on being under center and run in the more traditional offense. Perhaps in the bowl he can then run an expanded playbook which will make him, and us, even more effective.
