This season?

Last season it was poor outside shooting, lack of ball movement at times, and not getting much from the center position in games.

I know it is still really early and things could change later on. Just wanted to start a discussion.

You pretty much answered your own question......"I know it is still really early and things could change later on". With a lot of new players taking leadership roles we'll have to wait for the season to see a few games to make any real kind of evaluation about different aspects of this team.

That's why I said "what do you think" meaning your own opinions as of now. It's a speculation thread like the "Who do you think the starters will be" type threads. We won't know for sure until the actual games start but that doesn't stop people from stating their opinions on the matter. With the PR games there is actually a lot more to go by than the typical off season.

I think producing wins. Losing everybody and still new to the ACC with duke, unc**, Virginia, nc state. Tough, tough season for the Cards.

OK, so what are your thoughts about "Aspects Of The Game You Think This Team Will Have Trouble With?

Going to miss Harrell and his scoring ability from the PF position. I think Mangok and the others can do well defensively at that position though. Besides maybe Lee, finding someone else that can create their own shot when a bucket is really needed. Scoring production from the 5 spot is probably still in question, though the Cards don't need a ton from there- just enough to give the opposing defense some kind of threat. I think the added length on this team will help against those long, tall teams they usually have some trouble with, but will they have enough bulk to go with it?

What sticks out to me is rebounding. The bigs seem to want to box out and let the guards get the rebounds. I don't know If that is taught or if its just what i saw. We need bigs to be selfish and go get rebounds with two hands. Clear out space and go get it.

The other thing is free throws. We need intervention in that area.

Good news is all of the perceived weaknesses will be focused on for the next few months.

Looking forward to a fun year.

I think getting the younger people onboard with UofL basketball. I believe both transfers will bring enough offensive power. So I think we become a better shooting team...Losing Trez hurts because he was a beast mode but he was very limited himself offensively. So if we can get someone from the 4 to get physical and play angry we might be able to make up for his loss. I truly believe we will be better out of the 4 & 5 just have to wait for games.

From watching the 3 of the games in PR I think the #1 thing that these guys will need to understand is their particular role for this to be a winning team. A players vision of what they want their role to be and what their role needs to be many times are two different things. In one game Mango took a shot from nearly the 3 point line. He was open but he is going to hit that shot maybe 20% of the time. Not his role. Guys need to stick to their roles. In Mango's case that's defense, rebounding and leadership. Scoring for him will be off the offensive boards and from good passes from teammates. That's especially important on teams that don't have top shelf talent. And we don't. We have a lot of good players but not a single great one.

Last year one of the reasons we struggled in a lot of games is guys not playing the roles that the team needed them to play. That team had the talent to overcome that in a lot of the games. This team does not. But this team does have enough good players that if they stick to what they do best we could be a very good basketball team. If not, it could be a long season.

One man's opinion.

Passing and ball movement. We need more inside out actions. Our big guys last year have soft fingers and trouble catching the inlet pass then they struggle to pass out to the open man in the perimeter. Mangok handles the ball as if he has grease on his fingers last year. I hope that has improved.

Love that point Rock. Van Treese used to get an off rebound and find the 3 pt shooter. I know that was a direct result of his own offensive limitations but the guy understood an offensive board didn't have to involve an attempt to score on his own.

Nanu is a really, really good rebounder. He makes great outlet passes on the defensive end. I'm hoping if he can add offensive rebounding to his arsenal he'll be able to find the shooters at the 3 pt line. Defenses do not have time to cover that.

Historically, Pitino has never worked his offense from the inside out - with the exception of Samardo's sophomore year, which was a failure because the ball never made it back out. Anyway, I digress. This year will be the most painfull in terms of a perimeter oriented offense. There won't be any plays called for the bigs. They won't be posting up or getting any chances to create offense in the lane. This is going to put a ton of pressure on our guards to create off the bounce, and I'm just not sure we have the athletes to attack the paint like we have in the past. Q and Trey aren't going to blow by defenders - both struggle finishing in traffic. Mitchell has the athleticism, but needs to improve his handle before becoming a slasher. Right now, Lee is our best penetrator and finisher, which is a concern because he's also our best shooter. He's going to be relied on early and often, and I could see this team going on extended scoring droughts if Lee isn't getting the buckets. Pitino needs to have a plan in place for when defenses commit to shutting down Lee. He's going to get doubled, and teams are going to make it a priority to deny him the ball, with multiple defenders if necessary. Where do the points come from when the defense is overcommitting to Lee? The only way to beat those defenses is with great passing. They will need to pass the ball a lot better than last year and a lot better than what I saw in PR.

Lee is definitely a great player. If Louisville is good this year, it will be because Lee is a 1st Team ACC player.
Hope your right. I have only seen him play 3 games. But if he is a great player why is he playing a 5th year of College Basketball instead of opting for the NBA Draft.? Having said that, there have been a lot of great players at the collegiate level who did not have a lot of interest from the Pros.

Very true. Caracter had the same scoring mindset.

It's either a great high post facilitator or pick and roll.

What I'm hoping for is Nanu can have a mindset closer to SVT's than closer Samuels or Caracter's mindset. He doesn't have the offensive skill of Samuels or Caracter either.

I like your thought here but the reality is Rick will try to conquer this issue by playing better defense.

Because being the best player on an 11-19 team won't get you noticed by any NBA scouts. It begs the question though, why were they 11-19 with him being a top 5 scorer in the country? Look at the offensive numbers for the rest of his team and the answer is pretty clear (the 2nd leading scorer on his team hit an astonishingly low 31.5% of his field goal attempts). The rest of his team is just horrible.

Damion Lee reminds me a lot of Sean Kilpatrick who played for Cinci a couple years back. Kilpatrick was a 1st team All American and didn't even sniff the draft. Lee is in a similar situation, especially age wise. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Lee get drafted at the end of this season though. His quick release and accuracy from anywhere inside 25 feet is special.

This is painfully true

Worrying about Lee is about #15 in terms of things to worry about next year.
I watched 90% of the games played in PR, and I'd have a hard time criticizing Lee on any aspect of his game. I'm kinda at a loss with him. I don't expect that level of play to continue all season, but it's not like he was doing that against scrubs either.

I think spacing and separation at the offensive end.I agree with Rye bread that the offense has rarely gone in and out.The hi pick-n-roll requires a special talent like Siva to run.Willard was probably brought in to teach the motion offense, and the spacing and separation needed to run it effectively I think, will be key to this offense getting better shots. Now,do they get it with pure motion or Big Ten type screening with those big bodies,I don't know.

I think this group will be good defensively, because they know they need to be to win games.
