We are #1

Seriously. Had a UofK fan earlier today say he was surprised Mack took the job. Told him the UofL job is one of the very best in college basketball, and the Forbes list only helps prove that.
That was me and you clearly misunderstood. The UL job is one of the best in the country. No doubt. I said I was surprised that he chose to come to a school with pending sanctions. That said, this very fact should make you guys feel better. I’m sure Mack was briefed on the possibilities beforehand.

Really dont understand the doom and gloom attitude some posters on this board have regarding our Athletic Department’s financial situation

Thanks for starting this thread. I think this article was posted on a separate thread, but it's nice for this to have its own thread.

And for those who claim that the Yum has been a bad deal for the UofL athletic department, please note that, as the article states: “From the 2014-15 season through the 2016-17 one, Louisville basketball averaged annual revenues of $52 million and profits of $30 million.” That is quite a bit better than the last few years in Freedom Hall, where profits topped out at about $16 million

I agreed it was a done deal about two years ago when these data were compiled. That's pretty much the story regardless of time of day.

Done deal and I will soon see what the most recent two years tell us...

The numbers below are from ULAA Annual Reports.

U of L made less operating profit from basketball this past year than any year since 2005. We moved to Bailout Arena in 2010...

Well the writer does state that the data he used “is based on three-year average revenues across the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons (ties in revenue were broken using average profits).” However in the same article the writer states that “Louisville turned $23 million in profit LAST YEAR, (since this article was written in 2019 i’m ass-uming he means 2018) making it more profitable than the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Charlotte Hornets.”

The artucle also tells us that “from the 2014-15 season through the 2016-17 one, Louisville basketball averaged annual revenues of $52 million and profits of $30 million; across those three seasons, just four other college teams had more than $30 million in average revenue.” This quote here is saying that only four programs in all of college bball could even muster up enough revenue to equal our profits.

I’d say with a three year run like that there is likely to be some dips in revenue and profit from time to time, and based on how much overwhelmingly better that we’ve been than every other single school in college basketball the doom and gloom attitudes regarding our athletic dept financials are not warranted.

No problem, I know we’ve all heard of these numbers before but the guy who wrote the article dropped some new data in there regarding last year so i figured it was worth posting!

The writer needs to document how he did his calculation. U of L reported $2.3 million in basketball operating profit last year. That's in the FY2018 ULAA Annual Report...

He did document how he did his calculation. Gotta read the article, towards the end of it you’ll see the word Methadology in bold, this is where he explains his calculation.

That's just the first step... Then he needs to reconcile his calculation with what the University's outside accountants report.

What the ULAA internally reports to the NCAA could be anything. G-man on the premium site just linked what the gender equity people called 'revenue' and 'profit' for U of L last year. Nowhere close to what financial accountants show, night and day difference.

This ranking evidently has the problem of being out-of-date in addition to nonconformance with accounting principles. Otherwise, it would match U of L's numbers...
