1982 was most famous in these parts for the draw ... 6 seed Kentucky, facing off against 11 seed Middle Tennessee State, the winner to play 3 seed Louisville. We all know what happened there.
But we went on to whip MTSU 81 - 56.
Then beat 2 seed Minnesota 67 - 61.
4 seed UAB upset UVA, so we played the Blazers to go to the Final Four, beating them 75 - 68.
Facing Patrick Ewing and the Georgetown Hoyas in the semi finals. I have no recollection of this game. We lost 50 - 46. Low scoring for sure.
UNC with James Worthy, Sam Perkins and Michael Jordan went on to best the Hoyas by 1 point to win the national title.
Anyway .. I consider this our forgotten Final Four, because we won it all in 1980 ... and then played what is regarded by many as the best semifinal game of all time in 1983 against Phi Slamma Jamma, after winning the Dream Game against UK. . We went on to win it all in 1986 .... It just feels like 1982 falls through the cracks some.
