While not uncommon, I'm not crazy about it. Heird said he had a list of coaches in mind. Why go the search firm route?

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville has engaged the services of DHR Global to assist in its search process for a new head men's basketball coach.

"Identifying the right coach to lead our premier college basketball program is my focus," said UofL Interim Director of Athletics Josh Heird. "With the assistance of DHR, which has extensive experience in the athletics search space, we will conduct a comprehensive, inclusive and expeditious search for the next head coach to lead our storied program."

Glenn Sugiyama, Managing Partner, Global Sports Practice for DHR, will lead the DHR team assisting Louisville. Sugiyama, a former Division I college basketball coach and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Bulls, has been leading executive searches in the sports world for more than seventeen years.

"I am honored to help Josh and the University of Louisville in their search for a new head men's basketball coach," said Sugiyama. "The University has a rich tradition of athletics' excellence and a storied basketball program, and I respect the importance of this search for the program, students and alumni."

At first I didn’t like it, but considering the characters at the university I think it’s a great idea. Plus that firm has had their hand in some excellent hires and they get around a lot of the rules the university has to stick with. No in our situation its worth every $$

I seen somewhere that a previous school used this same search firm and it cost around $50,000

If that number is even close to the cost it’s well worth it!!
It beats paying 4.8 million for the low end of a buyout clause!!

Hiring search firm is great news. Now we can find out if Scott Drew is truly interested
You don’t need a search firm to pick up a phone or send an email. I think Heird is feeling pressure from boosters to hire KP, but he knows KP has a lot of question marks. Search firm takes some burden off his shoulders. Clever but also cowardly.

Refresh my memory, did Tom ever use a search firm for a major hire?

Nope, he hired Krapthorpe on his own.

"Cowardly" are those who don't want a national search and just hand the job to Kenny Payne

Not possible to vet everyone; and with the recent changes in acceptance and rejection criteria, there is no threshold to apply, (as Pearl, Wade, Self, etc could technically still qualify)

This school has a propensity for wasting money on 3rd party professional contractors; with the huge legal and administrative staff inside the University, we should be able to put a Selection Committee together internally.

Strong take seems like every business uses search firms to some extent . However it makes no sense for Louisville. Geez they can’t win. I promise you if they did it internally people would blame them for not vetting all the candidates.
