Louisville running back Trevion Cooley will be entering his name into the transfer portal, he announced Sunday on social media. He will not play in Louisville’s upcoming bowl.

"As I write this heartfelt message to all of Card Nation, I would like to thank all of you for the love and support over the last two years," he wrote in a post on Twitter. "I would I also like to thank the coaching staff, trainers, and academic staff for supporting me throughout my time as a Cardinal.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to show some of the things I can do. To my teammates/my brothers the best has yet to come and I can't wait to see what life have in store for all of you. Although my time as a Cardinal has come to an end I wish my former teammates and coaches nothing but the best."

Thanks to NCAA legislation adopted this past August, Cooley cannot officially enter the portal until next week. Players can no longer enter the portal any time they want, and have just a 45-day window from Dec. 5 to Jan. 18 to do so. There is also a 15-day window from May 1 to May 15 following spring practices.

Cooley is the first Cardinal to announce his intentions to transfer following the end of the regular season. He is the second to announce during this academic year, following safety Nicario Harper, who announced his intention to transfer back in late October.

His addition to the portal is not one that comes as much of a surprise. The 5-foot-10, 211-pound back did not see any action in Louisville last four games of the season, and had even been recently removed from the Cardinals' online roster. Playing in seven games, Cooley finished the season as Louisville's fourth-leading rusher with 284 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as well as nine catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

People knew he was transferring this was no surprise. No problem transferring but finish the season. Satterfield didn’t mention him or Mitchell on the injury report for the last 4 weeks. Satterfield wasn’t really pushed on it in pressers which I thought was odd. He kind just glazed over it.

He was asked about those two in this weeks PC. He answered the question in a very general way skillfully avoiding any mention of the two players. That's when I knew for sure they were leaving.

Well, bye

You threatened to last year.

And screw all the “best” to him. He’s played us us for two years. Get better of get gone.

If I had more time I’d say what I really think.

So many guys come and go because of that GD portal, I don’t really care anymore. Players transferring shouldn’t even be news, honestly.

I don’t know what the situation is but he hasn’t played since the WF game. I remember during one of our games an announcer saying he was suspended for an undisclosed matter.

I get transferring if you aren’t playing or want to go back home or just need a change. It is a useful tool, but a nightmare to manage.

I will never understand quitting during the season to transfer. It seems like that is the new trend. If I was a coach that would be a major red flag.

I suspect the fact that Cooley quit before the end of the season will affect his opportunity to transfer to a team oriented contender. The successful Head Coaches understand the importance of competing and the importance in refusing to quit; Cooley will find a new home, but doubt it will be a top 40 team.

I believe there is a lot more to the story here. I am not 100% but I believe he had multiple deaths in his family not positive on this, but it happened during this season. I believe it was a massive strain on his well-being and I'm not 100% sure all the details.
