If I counted correctly, 294 (72%) of the 410 Rivals 4/5 star prospects signed with the 20 all time top finishers in the AP polls. At least 17 of those all time 20 finishers (I'm excluding AR, MI St and NE which just have not got much done lately) are still regular Top 20/25 finishers today.
That makes it pretty damn tough on the rest of us and puts an even greater premium on this thing we call "coaching". Despite a horrible 2018 I am cautiously optimistic about a "good" 2019 that would hopefully set the table for years to come.
