Guardman: Opposing defenses have more than sufficient film over these years to adjust to Cunningham’s ability to run from the pocket. I have not seen evidence that Malik has lost any of his athleticism, speed or quickness, but I do see where he is intentionally trying to stay in the pocket much longer in an effort to find his receivers, and that explains for me his reduction in rushing yardage. I totally agree with you about his continuation with poor reads, and that further explains his recent struggles running the football. I think that one play where he was the recipient of the reverse and pass that led to a huge gain into the red zone, serves as an indication that Malik still has all of his elusiveness.
I have no proof to substantiate this observation, but I question whether Malik is actually 6’1” tall. Even at that published height, it appears to me that he has limited vision of the field, particularly his receivers in the center of the field. I often wonder if he would be more effective stepping further back, but I am sure that would only diminish his effectiveness to run from the pistol.
