One data point is hard to explain in isolation. No question, this past year was the best defense that LPT has fielded in the Stupes era. And this was in the face of Stupes' history as a former DC. How much of it was due to House, a few really good players, or the evolution of that unit?

Two of those are out the window...

When coaching staffs that stay together for multiple years those programs tend to have success. There is real value in coaching continuity especially at the coordinator level. When coordinators become a revolving door that is a problem and the end is near with Alabama being the exception. Stoops is running their defense.

Seems odd to lose him to NFL for a linebacker gig though. I know it is the NFL but good lord they turnover coaches yearly. He would have been set at UK and had ample opportunities down the road if he was really that good.

No body knows this better that UofL

Yeah, we saw the difference that a DC and players make at U of L in a short period of time...

The makings of a beautiful, ongoing relationship... :D

He was forced to stay contractually. Don’t know if I’d want somebody on staff who doesn’t want to be there.

Bro, I’m not sure I’d trust someone that wants to be at UKay. Him trying to escape shows that he cares about his future and the harm that those inbreds will inflict on it. Dude is going to coach his ass off to get out of there quick. We’d better be prepared.

Apparently he really didn't want to be there. He is going to end up at KC after all. UK has set their hostage free.

DJ Elliot was a problem the first few years. I think his lack of coaching ability made it to where Stoops had to over-manage the defense, while ignoring other aspects of the team. House really did a good job of managing it all together and I hate to see him leave.

I think the next man up is Brad White. He came on staff from the Indianapolis Colts and made big strides in scheme and development this year. I think Dean Hood as Co-DC with him will be the best option. Hood was a good coach at EKU and had some good defenses at Wake several years back.

House's biggest loss will be in recruiting...he was pulling in some good players. If those other 2 guys can manage the coaching part, then maybe bringing a good recruiter on staff can help mitigate the losses.

You left out another contributing factor - playing a schedule consisting of pretty bad offenses. Including ours.
This is true, but a little misleading. They did play 5 teams with a top 50 offense. They caught Florida and Texas A&M early with new staffs but still they held them below their season average. Georgia was the only team that made them look average.

Overall, that was a good defense no matter how you slice it. There offensive system protects their defense as well.
