Tailgating yesterday and I was talking to a guy who is, what I'd call a middle tier donor to the school. He told me the whole Papa John hissy fit with Jurich was over the naming rights to the stadium.

The naming rights with Papa John's are expiring soon. Jurich was going to open the bidding for naming rights to everyone. Papa got pissed thinking he is the anointed one for naming rights. Apparently, there are some other corporations interested in naming the stadium.

Seems like Papa loves the capitalist system, except when he is the one that could be on the outside looking in, now he looks like a socialist welfare whore.

I haven't seen this posted on here so I was wondering if any of y'all have heard this rumor as well?

Maybe it's not true, but it certainly makes a lot of sense if it is true.

I thought the naming rights were good through 2035 or something like that? Heck Jurich would have retired by then. Although that may have played a part in it. The other rumor is that Grissom had it out for Jurich and that had everything to do with his departure. Who knows. Both Pizza man and Grissom are egotistical jerks so I’m sure it’s a little of both.

Seems that Mr. Jurich may have created enemies by doing .... his job.

Certainly, the $2.5M Yum issue put Jurich on the wrong side of the Frankfort power base when he did not just simply give in to the arrangement - even after Frankfort declared the deal done - when it was not.

I personally believe this is closer to the truth. This why ultimately Bevin’s got involved in UofLs business.

The naming rights are not necessarily owned by Papa Johns Inc. They are owned by John Schnatter. He can technically name it whatever he wants even if he leaves Papa Johns.

The most recent information I can find on the naming rights contract seem to state that Papa Johns has the rights through 2040.

All true. Papa's relationship with Jurich started to sour after Yum secured naming rights to basketball arena. Yum, as we know, is home to Pizza Hut. Papa had his jimmies rustled as a result. He's that insecure. Jurich also didn't go along with everything Papa wanted to do at PJCS. That huge Papa John's logo on the roof- Jurich was opposed. Papa hot rodding in his vintage Camero- Jurich didn't like that, either. Papa is all about Papa. Jurich was trying to keep things all about UofL.

This certainly makes sense. I had heard it was about the expansion and Three Stripe Club, but that was probably just the last straw for little Napoleon.

The logo definitely cheapens the appearance of an otherwise excellent venue. Its way too big and just plain gaudy.

Other case where Jurich had it right.

Papa wanted to land his chopper in a better place on gameday too. I know that as fact.

These guys are all goons (if you don't like the word "scumbag"...)

Was Postel one of the academics who voiced their opinion (complained) about all of the money in UofL Athletics a few years back?

Interesting stuff. The more I hear about Papa, the less and less I like him or his crappy pizza. Sounds like a very petty little man.

Actually...Papa is mad because he can't surpass Pizza Hut and Dominoes....Yum Brands getting naming rights also ticked him off. I have met Papa several times and comes off as a arrogant jerk...which the way PJ's runs reflects that. Jurich tried to work with everyone in the Corporate world to be community partners with UofL. This whole thing just stinks.

I never thought about the Yum/Pizza Hut thing. This makes a ton of sense.

Yeah, I thought the sign painted on the roof cheapens the overall appearance of the stadium.

The arrival and departure in a helicopter at the football games is just a little too precious IMHO....
