The losses of Donovan Mitchell and Jaylen Johnson will result in something good for at least one Cardinal.

Former Manual high standout Dwayne Sutton will be placed on scholarship for the 2017-18 season. U of L made the announcement on Sunday.

Sutton transferred to Louisville from UNC-Asheville and sat out last season per NCAA rules. He was able to join as a walk-on in large part because his mother is a U of L employee, thus making his tuition at the school already paid for.

Sutton averaged 12.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg as a true freshman starter for UNC Asheville in 2015-16. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the Big South Tournament after scoring 25 points and snagging 18 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 77-68 win over Winthrop. Sutton then scored 11 points in the team's NCAA Tournament loss to eventual national champion Villanova.

In March, Rick Pitino stated that some of the coaches on staff believed Sutton was “every bit as good” as Deng Adel and V.J. King, and stated that he expects Sutton to compete for playing time this season

That bothers me a little bit to be honest. It should be a 100% consensus by the coaching staff. Not just some. That makes me a little unsure of what this young man is ready to contribute to this team.

Not sure why it concerns you that some coaches think he is really good and others think he is just good. Why does there have to be 100% consensus?

IDK. It just does in my messed up mind. I want this kid to come in and dominate, but the lack of total agreement among our own coaching staff about how good he is puts doubt in my mind.

My first year coaching high school basketball we played against Manual. Edit: He was a sophomore, got bored and went back and looked. He absolutely destroyed us. Another edit: He had 32 points. Big, physical playmaker who can finish around the rim and play in the paint as well. Would make a good undersized 4 for us given the situation/matchup, as well as he can play the 3 spot. I would like to think his jumpshot has greatly improved in 4 or 5 years as well. We're lucky to have him. CRP doesn't show the high school players in the city enough love or respect IMHO.
I have not seen this kid play, but I hope he's as good as some are saying he is.

I think what is meant here is that not all of the coaches have had the opportunity to see him play against competition.

I guess so. Regardless, it's extremely frustrating to see homegrown talent such as Russell and Kelan Martin get out of the city and thrive elsewhere. Extremely frustrating to say the least.

Sometimes local kids WANT to leave and get away from the hometown though. In those cases what can you do?

Probably best just to keep expectations in check for Sutton. Expecting too much from him from the get go- not accusing you of this- isn't fair to him.

My uneducated guess is that he will be able to help the team at times but I've never seen him really play and definitely not against ACC competition night in and night out.
