Texas officials have decided to fire third-year coach Charlie Strong, according to the Austin-American Statesman.

The Longhorns (5-6) need a win over TCU in the season finale Friday to become bowl eligible, but it is unclear whether Strong will be on the sideline. An announcement could come as early as Monday morning, per the report.

The move opens one of the highest-paying and highest-pressure coaching jobs in college football. With a salary north of $5 million per season, making him one of college football's 10 highest-paid coaches, expectations for Strong at a tradition-rich program like Texas were far beyond mere bowl eligibility.

Another excerpt;

Strong was 23-3 over the last two of his four seasons at Louisville, a run which made him one of the most sought-after coaches in the game after the 2013 season.

Wasn't a good fit. Most could see that. Nice payday for Strong though.

Yep. Knew he would get only 3-4 years. He'll land on his $$$$$ feet $$$$
Also will get a job at a small, low expectation P5/G5 school.

Alot of Cards said you couldn't blame Petrino for leaving for the NFL.
You can say you cant blame Strong for leaving for Texas.

This just continues to prove the old adage "the grass isn't always greener..." Can't blame him for trying, but he left a great situation for himself here. Although, with the Tracy Blue deal, he may have decided leaving was his better option.

Am I sorry he lost his job? No.

Growing up in Arkansas,surrounded by SWC football your whole life? Absolutely not.Texas football was a way of life I'm sure for Strong.It was probably one of two dream jobs.

Local news is reporting that some of the players are threatening to boycott the TCU game if Strong is let go. For the record, he is still the coach for now. Nothing official from UT other than his status as coach will be evaluated after the season is complete.

After seeing those players perform at Kansas last week I'd say Texas fans would say, yes boycott. Please!

Those fellas need to grow up. Charlie was given as much of a chance to succeed at UT as anyone ever gets at a Blueblood program. "Charlie Ball" was not a good fit for the wide open Big 12 IMO.

I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. College football is so powerful in the state of Texas, and I'm sure boosters' patience ran thin after his first season.

A good friend of mine who bleeds burnt orange said that it looked like most of the players were boycotting the last game against Kansas. I admit, that made me laugh when he said it.

FWIW, my friend thinks highly of the man coach Strong, but is fed up with his coaching decisions and is on the fire Strong train.
