WVU’s Andy Kettler looks like he’s going to be our new Strength Coach for basketball. I’m sure he had a LOT to do with the toughness of WVU’s teams for the past 10 years.

This is an awesome hire! No need to feel bad for Ganong though, I’m sure he’s being taken care of.

So did Macks strength coach from Xavier decide to stay there? I remember there was talk initially of him coming here. Either way I'm looking forward to a new person working with our players in that area. No offense to Ganong.

I always wondered about our guy's physical strength. I NEVER wondered about their physical conditioning. I always assumed it was just a Pitino thing to have lean (minimal body fat) players. I felt we have very often struggled in the areas of rebounding and finishing at the rim due to a lack of physical strength. I look forward to hopefully seeing some more muscular specimens being recruited, and some of the leaner guys bulking up some in their time here.

As I stated in a previous thread I can’t believe Ray couldn’t bulk guys up if that’s what Pitino wanted. Maybe that’s not what CRP wanted. Who knows

Jeez...anyway,rebounding has as much to do with timing, effort and relentlessness as anything.
Lack of fear for getting busted in the nose too. Villanova is a prime example. It's not a glorified aspect of the game.
I'm 5'9'',but I'm positive I could go get 5 boards a game...lol.

I never thought of Ray as a spaz I always thought he was intense and supportive of the players. I understand that Coach Mack wants to develop players differently and bring in someone different. I wish Ray well in the future and thanks for the years he gave to our program.

True about the rebounding. That takes more than height and strength alone. Positioning, timing, and effort go a long way with grabbing boards.

I am interested to see if our guys can gain more strength and toughness in order to finish through contact. Also to not shy away from contact when taking it to the rim.

Pitino didn’t want bulk, he wanted endurance and he wanted to outlast teams. However with the tv timeouts, review of plays for intentional fouls, out of bounds etc and excessive fouling, there are too many opportunities for players to rest.

Yep I agree. I didn’t state it as well as I could have.

Yeah, the game changed on Pitino just as it did on Crum.

There are eighteen (18) TO's per 40 minute game. Five per team (10) and four TV TO's per half. Conditioning is important, but if your not pressing the whole game, I don't think it's all that anymore. Big bodies are coming back.

In fact, I think with up to 40 games a year, Denny's philosophy of using games to get in shape instead of killing them in practice. May have some better legs (and shots) for tourney time.
