Stats like that always intrigue me ....
It’s tough to keep track of who exactly is on scholarship now, let alone who was on scholarship a year ago ... but based on participation information from the media guide on the 2018 season, we did return 52 players who participated in games last year. And I’m not counting PJ Blue, Dejmi Dumervil-Jean, or TreSean Smith in that list, since all three are out for the season.
I don’t quite come up with 22 players gone, but from the 2018 roster, I do find 15 gone from last year. Those were:
TE Kemari Averett (kicked off team)
DL Michael Boykin
DL Jonathan Greenard
WR Jatavius Harris
DL Jarrett Jackson
DL Allen Love
QB Sean McCormack
K Evan O’Hara
WR Marcus Riley
DL Kaheem Roach
RB Trey Smith
DB Lamarques Thomas
QB Jordan Travis
RB Dae Williams
RB Colin Wilson
Perhaps there were 7 or more who were on scholarship who never saw the field last year. Or perhaps that 22 number includes TreSean Smith, Dumervil-Jean and PJ Blue....
Bottom line to me is that, even with 22 gone, we still returned 52 players who saw action in 2018. No, that’s not good enough to compete with Clemson, but all of that returning experience does explain why we’ve been able to win 4 games this year. And the loss of 5 defensive linemen (not counting Dumervil-Jean) tends to explain why we’re so undersized at the DL spots.
