I want to get some observation on Ryan McMahon on his shooting situation. Granted this is just my opinion which doesn't mean absolutely anything at the end of the day but I would be curious to hear some of the thoughts out there.

It seems to me that the coaching staff needs to be working with him in practice more about effectively moving without the ball, shooting in transition, and staying within his "effective" shooting range. I say this as unless he is dead a$$ open, and I do mean dead , and his feet are cemented in place for a few secs he can't really be consistent. And he doesn't have the handles, size or hops so he just can't shake and or raise up over a defender and get off a quality shot.

More times than not and this may be on the coaching staff about conditioning and or talking to him about range but it seems to me like he is more or less heaving the ball instead of naturally shooting. To me when he shoots the first question that comes to mind is not if its going to go in or not , it's whether or not if it's going to even make the rim. Now I know everyone these days including these kids are caught up on the three ball and maybe I'm old but going back to transition, I see so many easy 2 pointers that Ryan could pull up and bust in the gap when we are on the run that would go along way. Sometimes it's easier to get into a rhythm with a few close bunnies and then start busting them from long range. This can have a ripple effect as now the other team has to keep a honest body on you as now they know " hey be careful as he can bust you in the gap and from the 3 " Last I checked 2 points still counts. Go Cards !

It seems to me that the mid-range shot is mostly dead in today's game. I remember when Terry Rozier was here, he would sometimes pop some of those mid range jumpers in the gaps that you are talking about quite effectively. I remember someone making a thread commenting on his mid range game and how effective it could be, as well as how rare it seemed to be in today's game.

As for Ryan, IIRC, I've read that Mack has given him an almost total green light to shoot when he is in the game. I do cringe at some of Ryan's waaaay out three pointers as they are probably not the shot you want, but man he can hit them sometimes like last night.

Another reason he has extended his range so far out though, is because he doesn't have the size, handles, and hops of more athletically gifted players so that he almost HAS to pull the trigger from way out in order to get his shot off. The word is out on Ryan and most teams put an emphasis of guarding him up close or bodying him up.

I'd like to see if he could try some more mid-range area jumpers as long as he doesn't try a bunch of just inside the three point line two pointers which are statistically bad shots.

He needs to practice getting fouled shooting 3s. Head fake, defender in the air and create contact in the process of shooting. He's practically automatic at the foul line after the foul.

We clearly can't rely on him being a ball handler so we need to go back to where he's the catch and shoot. He hit 3 in a row playing that way, but when we relied on him carrying the ball, several turnovers happened.

A few of the turnovers from the FSU game are also on who the pass was intended to. The receiver of the pass must also “step to the ball” as it is passed, basic 6th grade fundamentals.
