Rollie Massimino, who won more than 800 college basketball games and coached Villanova to an improbable national title in 1985, has died at the age of 82.

Massimino had been battling lung cancer. He died at his home in Florida.

He was best known for leading an eighth-seeded Villanova team to a 66-64 victory against No. 1 seed Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in the 1985 championship game. Massimino compiled a 355-241 record in 19 seasons at Villanova before leaving for UNLV in 1992.

Pulled off one of the biggest shockers in college basketball history!

Thought for sure the Hoyas would beat them.

Ed Pinkney had 16 points and 6 rebounds against Patrick Ewing in that game, and while it was a huge upset, the Wildcats played Gtown pretty close in the other 2 games they had played that year. Nova lost by 2 and by 7 against the Hoyas before meeting them a 3rd time in the title game. The Big East conference was fun to watch back in the 80's. It was called the BEAST for a good reason.

And to make it even sweeter....they did it in Rupp Arena.!!! And did it 5 vs 7...refs did their best to give the Hoyas the game....but old man fate was not to be denied that night.
