Improving the Gophers’ record from 8-23 to 23-8 in one season, University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino was named the Big Ten’s coach of the year.
The award caps an incredible turnaround for a team that completed the worst season in program history a year ago and led to questions over Pitino’s job security.
But with a revamped roster that included five new contributors, Pitino guided the Gophers to an 11-7 record in the Big Ten this season, their most conference wins in 20 years.
“With a young team, with a lot of newcomers who played significant minutes, it’s a testament to them that we were able to win 23 games and finish top four (in the conference),” Pitino said in an interview on Big Ten Network. “And obviously for me to get this award is humbling, and I’m appreciative of it.”
Pitino was coach of the year in separate voting by coaches and the media.
