We're bucking up a scholly for a long snapper (which I realize is probably a good move), but can we make the kicking position a priority? Please!

No shit !!! Crazy
Are you aware that Blanton Creque won the Elite Eleven Event in Los Angeles in 2014 his senior year of HS, at Collins? In the spring of that year he won the Chris Sailer national kicking contest in Atlanta. He was the All-State 4A kicker in 2013-14., and kicked a 38 yd FG in their state championship game, which they won by 3 points over Highlands..

He broke his ankle in the spring and is just now getting back to 100%. He is 4-5 on FGS. Had 81 KO touchbacks in HS so can put the ball into the EZ, when asked to.

He turned down several scholarships to walk on at Louisville, who heavily recruited him.

We've had quite a few really good kickers over the years so I hope this kid rounds into form and becomes one of them.

Thanks for the info. I doubt many were aware of the severity of his injury. From the looks of things he has the pedigree to develop into the ranks of David Akers or Art-omatic.

Thanks, Boone! He actually has been working with David for two or three years. Art-omatic keeps up with him as well.

Maybe its the injury referred to above but the thing that concerns me right now about Creque is his kicks seem to have a very low trajectory which makes them susceptible to being blocked. Still of the two I feel better about him.

A kicker was already a priority in the last class. We signed Austin Johnson, the kicker from DeSales HS, to a scholarship. He just wasn't good enough (yet) to beat out either Mason King at punter, Evan O'Hara/Blanton Creque at placekicker, or those two kickers plus senior Anthony George as kickoff specialist - so for this year he is currently redshirting.

We go through this cycle just every four years when senior placekickers, kickoff specialists, and punters graduate, as they did last year. The guys we have will be developed to the point where they will be assets for us, hopefully as soon as next season. This year is going to be a struggle, as it almost always is in the first year after a kicker graduates.

A long snapper is a decent scholarship investment, because they usually can last four years if they're good and we've had some really good ones over the course of the last twenty years and a long snapper impacts multiple layers of your special teams including the two most dangerous as far as major impact on a football game...placekicking and punting. A muff in either of those areas puts you at severe risk of losing.

Placekickers are a tougher sell for four years; translating quality from HS to college is really difficult, so much so that offering a kicker a ride right out of HS comes with huge risk. A placekicker really needs to earn that scholarship as uncomfortable as that sounds.

Two things- we haven't had to worry about the kicker in a long time. We lost Wallace, the record holder for field goals made in a career. Obviously, you take a hit in that department once that goes away. Secondly, there's a transition period with new kickers. These guys will get there. They are young.

Why do you hate Blanton Creque and Mason King so much?
lets start over you and I. be less adversarial.

but to answer your question, the production of our kicking game is subpar.

I hope that we are never in a situation where a kick could win a game for us with what we have. They may develop into D-1 kickers over time, but as of today they are not.

are you happy with the production from the kickers?

My comment was actually a joke because it is obvious to most that just because a poster is critical of or doubts a player does not mean that you hate the player or do not support him and hope for the best.

To your question, I am generally happy with punting. I am not unhappy with FG's, but there is room for improvement. Ask me again when we miss a game winner. However, we all knew this would be a problem this year, due to losing Wallace and the youth of the kickers now on our roster.

I see some promise with King and Creque, both of whom I expect will only get better. You also have to understand that being 7-11 on FG's does not necessarily mean it is entirely the kicker's fault. I have to admit that I cannot remember each missed FG, so I cannot recall what happened. However, I did listen to CBP's show wherein he placed blame for at least 2 misses outside of the actual kicker. Recruiting a kicker now will do nothing for this year and very unlikely next year. I think the guys we have will get the job done, especially as they get more experience. BTW, our opponents have only made 2-5 against us, so we are not alone.

What's wrong with 4-5 FGs and KOs where coaches want them?

Blanton Creque sets UofL school record by a Kicker today with 18 points by going 4for4 on FGs and 6for6 on Extra Points in a 54-13 rout over a NC State team that was a missed 33 yard FG away from beating #3 Clemson last week in Death Valley.

The kid from Shelbyville looks pretty good to me.

He's kicked 9 in a row (9-10 overall) and ranked in top 10 in nation in FG%. And just a red shirt freshman - only frosh in top 50!

I'm a Bama alum and our senior kicker is 9-13, and missed a 29 yarder today!

And ... what about Mason King's punting???

Go Cards! Roll Tide!

so if that is how it works and the guy comes off the bench and has a record setting day, I am all for it. Hope this helped his confidence.

How you feelin 'bout King and Creque three years later? Just curious! I believe Creque nailed a 40+ yarder to beat FSU a couple of years ago, didn't he?
