I cannot recall a class quite this small in terms of actual signees, but one that appears to have addressed specific needs. Signing a 350 lb. DT (Tawfig Thomas) is unprecedented at UL, and an indication that Satterfield recognized that size was one of the most obvious defensive needs. Many questioned his staff’s decision to implement a 3-4 scheme with an under-sized NG, and DTs and DEs that were smaller than our opponents. It should be noted that as circumstances presented themselves, we played a lot 4-3 and even 5-2 alignments; the latter proved unsuccessful against UK, as it placed a lot of pressure on our two (2) LBs, evidenced by Levis taking advantage of the opening up the middle. As I understand Thomas was offered by Michigan, an indication that he is not just big but talented.
Three (3) 4 Star signees is encouraging, again signing a true NG, two coveted DEs, a middle LB ago replace CJ Avery suggests this staff was focused on defensive needs. Flipping the 4 Star WR from FSU, and getting Wiggins (former 4 Star) transferring from Miami serves as a nice replacement for Marshall leaving and clearly that addresses the needs on the offensive side.
The two (2) 2-Star signees, plus the one (1) without any rating appears to be most consistent with Satterfield’s own ability identifying potential recruits that fly under the radar of others. I have no idea how that works out, but then time will tell those who are patient enough to wait and see.
