Pitino to UCLA chatter

I hope he gets the job. UCLA deserves Dick Pitino. Maybe they’re adidas also. Sooooooo . . . .

Against the backdrop of California, Californians know how to view "scandal" in the proper perspective.

What scandal?...

Cali is a great place for senior citizen coaches to start again. Just watch the cheerleaders! Most are named Karen.

Nobody cares

I do. Hell it’s only been two years since he left our program ravaged by scandal. Whether he knew or not it does piss me off knowing he could walk right into another job and take them to a championship, although it’s unlikely.

We agreed that he decimated the program.
We also should never mention his name again.

I spit on the ground he walks-

It could have been avoided though. I’ll admit, I said back when the Sypher affair happened that TJ shouldn’t have fired him due to the fact that it was his personal life, but hindsight is 20/20 and i was wearing some thick red tinted glasses. TJ should have fired him over that, the situation was terrible with him having the affair in a public place. Now if TJ would have fired him we would have never won the 2013 title, but at least we would have avoided the Powell mess.

Without paying Pitino, he could only have been fired WITH CAUSE. Read his 2010 contract and let us know if that was possible. Otherwise, it wasn't...

I understand that. Though I don’t know how much we would have owed him if we fired him without cause, would it have been worth the Katina Powell mess? Could you even put a number on what that mess did to the UofL brand?

The affair was bad, but I think it became fireable when he paid her off to get an abortion. That’s just an ugly look.

I don't have a copy of his contract, but standard practice is three years' pay. If that was the number, you're talking $15 million.

Now, in the context of recruiting 5-star kids, I just had another guy in this space willing to call Chane Behanan successful because of 2012-13--the banners from which "Vince" and U of L have voluntarily surrendered. And not recruiting Behanan would have cost us $0.

Two different situations, coach and player, but equally destructive if that's the way you look at this stuff. You'd eat $15 million, another fan thinks of Behanan as a "success"...

Okay, say 15 million to fire Pitino after the Sypher ordeal. What are the cons? No 2012 final four and no 2013 nat championship.

The pros, well we would have avoided the notoriety of being the first school to have a nat championship stripped from us. We would have one less thing for the uk fan base and the entire country to rag on us about (katina Powell mess). We would have possibly avoided the adidas mess considering Pitino and Vacarro’s relationship. Lastly, we’d still have TJ leading us.

Are all those pros worth $15 million?

I think if the Pitino drama had been contained to pre-2010, almost 100% of the fanbase would have continued with Pitino in exchange for a F4 and national championship.

The fallout with slapd!cks is irrelevant. National impact wasn't too bad or lasting or we wouldn't have attracted the recruits and money we did. The ACC invite came a year later as well. This stuff is big in the minds of fans in the heat of the moment. Otherwise, it's not so important.

And the $160 million adidas deal--or something like it--might not have been possible without Pitino. He was a big plum in the pie.

Considering all of that, I don't think a majority would have favored canning Pitino with NO buyout...

Of course your first paragraph makes sense if the Powell/Adidas drama didn’t happen.

I’m not so worried about the smurfs as I am national attention, as that still hurts us every time espn writes an article about Pitino, or our b-ball program. I think our history under Crum combined with Mack’s recruiting ability is the only thing pulling recruits now.

Regarding the Adidas deal, we’ll never know if it was possible w/o Pitino because he was our coach, but I have confidence that Jurich would have hired a guy that would still have made us attractive.

What money are you referring to? (See bold above)

The money between Sypher and Pitino's exit, roughly 2010-2017. Still a sharp trajectory higher...

National talking heads are writing today about far more that the extortion scandal. That was your original talking point, what should Jurich have done in 2010. Without the wisdom of hindsight 9 years later, that answer was clearly "keep Pitino"...

Yeah, i said as much, i was basing it off hindsight, check my post that started us discussing this. The thing is, with the Sypher mess in mind, TJ still stuck with him through the Powell mess when he shouldnt have.

Well hindsight is always 20/20 and I agree with your position. The “stripper gate” scandal should have been the end of the road for “Dick” Pitino and, for me (a huge Tom Jurich fan) this should have been the end of the road for “Dick” and was a major mistake by Tom and, indeed, us as a fanbase.

Yeah in 2019, a lot of stuff may appear obvious. I just recall in 2016 when people were ready to hang Ramsey in effigy for self-imposing and Pitino was trying to cover for him. No one was arguing then that Pitino should have been the guy in the noose.

We need a little more genius in action, not after the fact...

Talking on point, or just more deflection and character assassination?...
How is one guilty of character assassination when he is talking about a person with very (low to no) character.
