Pitino, Mashburn Group In Talks To Buy French Basketball Team
An American investment group that includes Iona men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino, former NBAer Jamal Mashburn and former NBA Exec VP/Basketball Operations Stu Jackson “is in talks” to buy French pro basketball team Elan Bearnais. Pitino said the group’s “goal is to buy an NBA franchise and move it to Seattle,” and acquiring the French club would give it an opportunity to “test our ideas on a smaller scale.” Pitino on Saturday said sale talks are “in the early stages,” but he expressed optimism the deal will go through. If it does, Pitino said he would “be involved in setting up the sporting operation” for Elan Bearnais, but would stay at Iona. Pitino also said the group wants to use a cryptocurrency-based system of ownership with the French club, so “fans can partake in ownership of the team.” Pitino: “You buy a token, let’s say for 10,000 dollars, that corresponds to a percentage of the team” (L’EQUIPE, 1/25).
