How does WKU have such a much bigger band than we do? We're a major P5 school, how does this happen?

This is coming from a former (UK) marching band guy. Size of band has no relevance to the quality of the band. There is a point of diminishing musical return.

If it is like Carolina, I bet they are not offering credit hours and it is strictly a voluntary activity. Carolina's band absolutely sucks and is extremely small for a school of that size. If they offered credit hours, I am sure it would expand in size.

In 2006 our band was just over 300, were now in the 160s. You can barely hear them and their just not much to watch. I think we need a new band director personally.

All they get is a $1000.00 stipend, however all travel is paid for plus money for food when they travel.

Odd to find the talk about the band? Yep, some oddity here.
Disagree. Look at the big-time (especially southern football powers) they all have huge impressive bands. It’s like this too, the more band members the more impressive the program looks and the more butts there are in the seats. How so? Well, if we have a band of 300 instead of 150 that’s another 150 sets of parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents wanting to see little Johnny or Suzie play in the band at the big game.

Tyra needs to address this someday and take the band into the big time to compete with Clemson and the SEC schools IMO.

I might have wrong info but doesn’t the UofL band also take students from Bellarmine, IU-Southeast, Sullivan, and Spaulding? If not, maybe they should. That would boost numbers.

I know Vanderbilt takes students from Belmont, Lipscomb, and other Nashville area colleges with no football and adds them to its marching band.

I went to both WKU and UofL. The answer is there are a lot more nerds at WKU.

I kid. Kind of. Not really.

Most university bands are made up from their Music department. UofL uses a bunch of the metro schools like Commodore said. So we dont have a true university band. B1G has the best bands although Grambling was very impressive when they came here during John Ls tenure.

The HBCUs have the best bands. The big 10 is 2nd though.
