Wichita State officials are reportedly engaged in talks to join the American Athletic Conference, a move that could come within the next two weeks and take effect for next season.

Sports Illustrated reports multiple sources say Wichita State and the AAC share a mutual interest. Any move would have to be approved by AAC-member university presidents, but their approval would seem to be a given, considering the millions in NCAA Tournament revenue the Shockers could bring in to be shared by AAC schools. The Shockers, who finished 31-5 this season and lost to Kentucky in the Round of 32, earned $3.2 million from this year's tournament.

Wichita State has been a member of the Missouri Valley Conference since 1945. MVC officials are reportedly prepared for Wichita State's imminent departure.

Sounds like it would be a good move for both Wichita St. and the AAC.

Yeah, under Gregg Marshall they have clearly outgrown the MVC, which is no small feat. It's a tough mid-major conference most years.

No one will be happier than Illinois State.

Following in Louisville's footsteps...Just 55 years later...IMHO, I think they'd be a good fit in the Big East with Butler, Creighton and Xavier...I think Dayton would be a good add for the Big East as well!!!

Wichita State would be going to the AAC, not the Big East. Wichita State's opponents would be Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, Memphis, UCF, USF, Houston, East Carolina, Tulsa, Temple, and Tulane, not the Big East teams you mentioned.

Essentially, Wichita State would be the basketball-only school to offset Navy's football-only AAC membership, giving the conference 12 members in both sports.

Try to keep up...I didn't say that Wichita State was going to the Big East...I said that they are following in Louisville Footsteps of MOVING out of the Missouri Valley Conference...55 Years Later...To a BETTER Conference!!!

I also said that IMHO, they'd be a good fit, along with Dayton in the Big East...Because neither of them have D-1 Football Programs...Man, Some people on this board have a BIG Problem with reading comprehension!!!

IDK Cincy, Wichita, Tulsa and Houston? Sounds like a BB conference I used to watch as a kid on a B&W. All that's missing are Bradley, Drake and the Big O.

Okay, if you're going to impugn my reading comprehension skills, the gloves have to come off.

Some people have a problem clearly expressing their point.

Nowhere in your post did you state that you were NOT talking about Wichita State going to the Big East, which was a poor choice for two reasons: (#1) how well Wichita State would fit in the Big East was a tangent that had not been discussed by anyone previously in the thread and (#2) the current Big East and the current American grew out of the old Big East.

I expressed my OPINION in what conferenc where I thought the Shocker would fit BETTER than the AAC...Its obvious that was a wee bit too hard for you to comprend...Them and Dayton would restore rivalries with Creighton and Xavier, and give the Big East a Western/Eastern Division line-up if they chose to go that route!!!

And yes, I made it clear by highlighting the post about Wichita State out growing the Missouri Valley 55 year after Louisville did, then added my IMHO...That should have been a clue that I thought they'd be a better fit in the Big East vs the AAC!!!

Wichita State had a good football team when Louisville was in the MVC. Dayton also was a regular football opponent of the Cards. Dayton when non grant in aid when Title 9 came in, but I don't know what happened to Shocker football.

A plane crash back in the late 60's led to a decline in the program which was disbanded in late 70's or 80's. Too long ago.

One thing keeps them from being a good fit for the Big East......... they are a public university, while the Big East schools are all private universities.

A great fit competitively, but a poor fit institutionally.

So is Louisville...UofL hasn't been a private school since like 71-72!!!

I remember the crash. It was similar to what happened to Marshall. I didn't realiize it contributed to the end of football there.

I bet Mick Cronin can't wait for Gregg Marshall's wife to come to Fifth Third Arena, get drunk, and start calling him a MFer and his wife a whore.

At the Final 4 in Atlanta in 2013, I would take smoke breaks (for nerves) and happen to hang out with these two old ladies from Wichita State....they were very nice, very cool to chat with. They had a Marshall like plane crash that hurt their program severely. Also, according to them, the Kansas state legislature (all pro KU and KSU) cut funds to the school (sound familiar?). Everything the Shockers do, they do on their own, whether it's with their own money or thru corporate donations. They want to start their football program back someday soon, AAC membership will allow them to do that.

If memory serves Louisville and Wichita were both seriously looking at the state of their football programs in the late 70s. The costs of running a program meant both were losing money. Louisville was considering getting out of the top division and joining the other state schools in the second division.
Had UofL done that I can't imagine we ever would have attracted Tom Jurich. What a different world it would be.

I may have to go to a UC game to catch her act firsthand.

Yeah, baby.

I was wondering how that would work a basketball only school going to the AAC, since most of the conference moves have been made mostly based on football.

I also found their fans to be pretty nice...until we won. It all came out then.

I think I remember watching UofL playing Wichita State in Football in the early 70's at Old Cardinal/Fairgrounds stadium. I definitely remember games against Drake and William and Mary.

Apparently Murray State is being targeted as a replacement for Wichita in the MVC. As an alumni, I would love to see the Racers take the step up and join a better conference with better exposure and more money.

That would actually be a good move for the Racers!!!

Question: is the MVC an FCS conference in football or are they D1? Anyone? There's no doubt that this would be a very good move for MSU basketball.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

There is a MVC Football conference (formerly the Gateway Conference), but I think it is not officially connected to the MVC basketball/other sports conference. It was the conference WKU was in before their jump to the Sun Belt. It currently holds teams like North Dakota State and Youngstown State.
