Tony Gwynn

That man was something special. When i think of the most respectable players of all time and especially of the 90s he's in limited company with the likes of the iron man and the wizard. RIP Mr. Gwynn.

One of the best hitters of all time and a great guy off the field. I was amazed when I looked up his stats, he hit .338, .323, .324 in his 18th, 19th and 20th seasons in the League. He was 39, 40 and 41 years old then. Or how about at the ages of 34 thru 37 hitting .394, .368, .353 and .372!

He also led the NL in hitting 8 times, was a 15 time All Star and won 5 Gold Gloves. He hit over .300 in 19 consecutive years and finished with a lifetime batting average of .338.

Tom Verducci of SI.com wrote a nice piece on Gwynn here.

RIP Tony.

Totally bummed here as well. He joins Kirby Puckett as great one who left us far too early.

I have never heard a bad word about him. Nothing but good. His life extended far beyond the stat sheet.

He and Rod Carew are probably the two best contact hitters during my lifetime.

The 1994 season in which he hit .394 was shortened by the strike. It would have been great to see him chase .400.

Another interesting stat I heard today was that he struck out a grand total of three times against Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux.

RIP, Tony
