I’m convinced Texas doesn’t care at all about basketball. A guy who grew up there that I met recently told me that they don’t even watch march madness. They care about football and then baseball. Basketball is 3rd at best to them. Shaka can recruit and he would be about my 3rd or 4th realistic choice.
Can't imagine why he would even be in the our top 10. I still remember when some people said he was better than Brad Stevens. lol
Who’s on your list? Just curious because I really am getting anxious about this hire.
At this point I am just rounding up the usual suspects. The guys we used to talk about like Stevens and Donovan are not coming unless they are looking to get back into the college game for some reason but doing a great job of concealing it. I think Mack is very realistic for us and he might be a good fit. He is doing a great job at Xavier but is he someone that can move to the next level and compete for a national title here? I'm sure there are 2 or 3 guys out there that I would never think about that could work out. I just think Smart is someone who has gotten his chance at a big time program with access to lots of recruits and is showing nothing. Just can't consider him here based on what he has actually done.
Burning his final time-out to ice a FT shooter was a questionable move - and the players did not know what to do after the made 2nd FT. All the players ran away from the inbounds passer and he was left to lob it up... so that was a really bad sequence and makes me wonder about the guy for sure.

I think Mack is the best option that’s both realistic and a solid coach. But the same could have been said for Shaka a few years ago. The fact that Mack, Alford, and Painter are the only 3 names that have surfaced in the news makes me think it’s Mack or bust.
To me, Mack has shown decent consistency which Smart has not. I think Jurich could lock him down here pretty fast but I not so sure about the current crew. I have no interest in Alford.
Mack is best option because he has maintained a program at a high level for a long time. He has done it by bringing in the right guys that fit in his system. He doesn't seem to recruit at the highest level. I think he has 1 MM player. Who knows who is dirty at this point?
The importance of this hire can't be understated. I think that is why everyone is hyper aware of the group making the call. It will be a longer contract than anyone is going to be comfortable with so the wrong guy is going to be costly on multiple fronts.
