WNBA Atlanta Dream head coach Nicki Collen is leaving the WNBA to take over as coach of the Baylor women's basketball team, the school announced Monday.
Collen was a college assistant before moving to the WNBA, working at Florida Gulf Coast, Arkansas, Louisville, Ball State and Colorado State. She worked with her husband, Tom Collen, at Arkansas, Louisville and Colorado State when he was head coach at those schools. She played collegiately at Purdue and Marquette.
OK, some one explain this hire to me. She couldn't produce a winner at the the troubled Atlanta Dream franchise, she's never been a head collegiate coach and has bounced around more than a super ball on concrete steps. As an assistant, she's never nbeen past the NCAA second round.
I'm no A.D. or college president, but I don't get the hire. Maybe they're looking to save money affter the expensive Mulkey contract. It just puzzles me.
