New U of L trustee is ineligible for board

One of the two people that Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin recently appointed to the University of Louisville board of trustees is ineligible for the position.

U of L board chairman David Grissom said in a note to other members of the board that Kevin Fuqua, who is partner and tax services team leader for Louisville-based MCM CPAs & Advisors, would not be able to take his appointment on the board of trustees because he has a relative who works for the university.

"Unfortunately, this disqualifies him from becoming a member of the Board of Trustees…," Grissom wrote. "I hope you will join me in thanking Kevin for his willingness to join our ranks and serve his alma mater."

State law states that "no relative of a board of trustee member shall be employed by the university." Grissom's note states that Bevin is aware of the situation.

WDRB.com reports that Joshua Fuqua, a professor in U of L's Center for Predictive Medicine, is Kevin Fuqua's brother.

Bevin's office announced on Sept. 6 that Fuqua, who is a U of L graduate and Peewee Valley resident, and Louisville resident Dr. Fred Williams would fill board vacancies left by Papa John's International Inc. founder John Schnatter and Stites & Harbison PLLC attorney Brian Cromer.

Schnatter has had a very public falling out with his company and the university that was touched off by his admitted use of a racial slur in a media training exercise. Schnatter resigned from the board of trustees in July.

About two weeks later, Grissom announced at a board of trustees meeting that Cromer had resigned from the board.

U of L named Cromer's firm in a lawsuit against former officers of the University of Louisville Foundation, which include former president James Ramsey, over allegations of mismanagement at the foundation.
