Old Timer, huh. Well, I resemble that remark.
The cheerleaders used to lead a cheer using four signs, one sign directed at each of the four sections of Freedom Hall (two ends behind the goals and two sides of the court is four sections). Each sign had one word on it:
- Go
- Cards
- Beat
- name of the team Louisville was playing
So, the cheerleaders would hold up the sign for each section to yell the word on the sign at their specific time, and the cheer "Go Cards Beat (whoever)" would circle Freedom Hall several times
Probably some time in the late 80s, in the game following the Purdue game, the cheerleaders had the "Purdue" sign instead of the sign for our opponent that night. The fans in that section noticed it and yelled "Purdue," even though it was clearly a mistake. Every other section figured out what was going on and had a good laugh. Thus, a tradition was born. The cheerleaders tried it in a few more games, but you could see the frustration and annoyance on their faces as fans would not let them forget the mistake.
The few times I have been to the KFC Yum center, I did not see them do that cheer. I assume they brought it back last night.
