ND at Louisville Discussion

I worry about Satterfield building our program up and leaving. More than likely to North Carolina after 4 years. If he does leave because he is that good that would mean our program will be in good shape. If he does leave I wish him luck because that Louisville curse will probably make him wish he never left.

I don’t know if he would leave for another ACC job at a program that isn’t more accomplished? The ACC really has been a one team conference recently & Satterfield could make Louisville among the top 3 in the conference, why would he go elsewhere in the same conference? FSU stinks under Taggert. Who knows about Miami under Diaz? VT is losing Foster. Virginia will be good under Bronco. Babers could leave Syracuse soon. Really, other than Clemson, the conference is there for a second team to shine & Satterfield could do that.

You’re in or you’re out. If you’re in, then there are no classes of membership, just as there are no classes of citizenship. “Bottom feeders” don’t have the same financial rewards as more successful schools, nor should they. But with respect to conference membership, “affiliation” doesn’t add value. Let ND park their other sports in the Missouri Valley if they want to. By agreeing to the current arrangement we are simply perpetuating it.
That kinda mentality is why you see rifts develop in the ranks. Have-nots riding the coattails of the haves. It's a defense of doormats, complacency, and mediocrity.

And it really has little to do with U of L's athletic heritage, where it's always tried to be the best at its level of competition and move up by whatever criteria made sense. That's why the "status quo" talk we hear nowadays represents a culture change...

I mentioned North Carolina because he is from there and they offered him a Head Coach in waiting job under Mack this year. Mack is too old to be the Head Coach for more than 4 years and they wanted Satterfield to replace Mack.

And why would a guy go to UNC football when over the past 20 years UofL football has been the superior football program. And these are the facts of the situation.

Exactly why CSS would say no thanks to NC if they come calling. I find it ridiculous that a ND fan got anyone talking about CSS departing.

Now this thread has “discussed” the ACC and potential ND membership sometime in the future. While this has been entertaining there is something I’d like to say. As UofL fans we have seen the trials and tribulations, successes and failures of our former great Athletic Director Tom Jurich. But I’d just like to say that absolutely none of this ACC discussion happens without Tom Jurich. Our inclusion into this superior P5 conference is a credit to him and his leadership. Just thought I’d throw this statement out there. The ACC chose UofL because of our facilities, basketball success AND past football success in addition to athletic success across the board in all sports. Also because of our improving academics under former President Ramsey. Now I’m not saying that those two gentlemen did everything perfectly and above board, but our inclusion into this wonderful conference wouldn’t have happened without those two gentlemen. And regardless of your feelings about either of them, I’d suggest that we not forget this.

There is no reason for Satterfield to leave Louisville for UNC other than it is home for him. We have had a lot of success over the years but we have still had coaches leave. Correct me if I am wrong but we have had 4 coaches leave in the past 20 years.

Yes, you are correct. But those “moves” entailed moving to football programs that were adjudged to be of higher profile than UofL. Texas, Michigan State, Atlanta Falcons/Arkansas and Oklahoma. It is my contention that UNC is not a football program of higher profile but, rather, of lesser profile even though they were a long time member of the ACC our football program was in a better reputation position than theirs. That fact alone speaks to UofL’s football superiority. And, by the way, CSS rejected the last UNC effort to keep him there and he chose to come to UofL.

CSS and his departure date is impossible to forecast. He has to answer some really big questions over the next 2-3 years to even put himself in a spot to move on or up. From what I have seen and read it seems like he and his family have adjusted well to Louisville and hell Boone, NC is only a 6 hour drive away.....

My hope is that he builds this back up the right way and we are back to winning 8-9+ games a year by 2021, signs a long contract and has us competing against Clemson to win conference chamopinships. See no possible way he would leave here for UNC.....make zero sense! Moneywise we have proven we are competitive across the board in paying our coaches, so it won't be financial.

The man has not even coached, much less won, a game at UL and a visitor brings up "where is he going next?". Because he was/is on their short list? Says who? A guy on a message board. Just like me.

It was a "know your place" comment. Period

IF he gets us to where somebody "bigger" wants him, we will have no problem getting yet ANOTHER good coach.

Right now that's a BIG "if".

It didn't need to be brought up..... except give us a jab.

No.
When BK went 4-8 and names were coming up as a replacement, Satterfield was on the list of top 5 candidates.
And nobody was giving you a jab. If Satterfield succeeds the NFL will come calling. Or Programs that throw money at coaches (like A&M is doing with Fisher). It happened with Kelly & the NFL in 2012. So it happens to everybody, including ND. That’s just the way it is.
There is literally no negative talk towards Louisville on here & a few people are getting worked up.

You got an answer to your question, and you also got multiple posters telling you that it's not a topic worth discussing before he's coached his first game here. Take that hint and let it go.

should we be moving up to the NFC East next?
As I stated, there are differences financially among members of any given conference, and that’s OK. The problem is, if you have a conference, shouldn’t the same rules and standards be applied to all? If not, why have conferences? I don’t like “special rules” for ND and not for others. It’s not a defense of “doormats” but of simple fairness.

Let's get closer to winning our conference in each sport first. Not just participate, maintain, hold course.

Rules do not equal rewards. You're rewarded for performance while playing by the same rules as everyone else. That's the only connection between the two.

It's true that not everyone can win their conference. That doesn't mean it's OK to be rewarded as if you did or like the team/school that did. That's simply the way things HAVE BEEN done. And it needs to change...

That’s the point. Successful schools ARE rewarded financially. But the rules of competition have to be the same for all conference members. Maybe Clemson wants to join the $EC in football, but leave basketball in the ACC. Is that OK? I wouldn’t be for it. If we are going to have conferences, they should be associations of schools, not athletic programs. The rules of membership should apply to all members equally. Otherwise, it’s a farce. ND should not get special rules just for themselves.

ND starting TE & expected NFL draft pick Cole Kmet broke his clavicle today diving for a TD catch.
The staff says he will return early in the season, but not until late September, which means he will not play against Louisville.

Also, OL Quinn Carroll tore his ACL and is out for the season. He is a freshman so was not I the two deep so no affect on Louisville game.

ND and every other athletic program should get what it deserves financially, no more or less. They bring a helluva lot to the table in that regard, and they deserve every nickel of it from whatever conference they participate in.

Settle down there.
If you have read posts before you will see that a lot of people at ND like Satterfield a lot & think he has a big future ahead.

It’s not getting rhetorical at all. There is no stench except for what you are implying. You are getting too deep into your own head trying to find something negative when nothing negative has been said.

Any why do I care? I’ve posted on this very board that ND had him on their short list of coaches to replace Brian Kelly when he leaves.

You gotta lot of nerve coming onto OUR board and telling one of our posters (Rollem Cards) to “settle down”. You do understand that you are OUR guest here? Right? Your entire post was couched in the attitude of hey Card fans “remember your spot in the college football food chain” and that is nothing but a very rude and over the top attitude. There is very little doubt about the possible end result of ND’s visit here on Sept. 2nd but over the past 10 to 15 years your football program has not been superior to ours. It’s that simple so take a clue and “settle down” as long as you are our guest here.

Pure capitalism as you are describing is just as unsustainable as pure socialism is. If the few top football programs like Clemson and Bama took all the money it would eventually lead to collapse. Interest would wain when nobody else in the conference can even dream of winning it after awhile and then Clemson's money is going to dwindles just like everyone else's.

Clemson's financial draw may not significantly change. What do they bring to the ACC in any other sport besides football? What does Duke bring outside of men's basketball?

A value for each school in each sport should be calculated. And the sum for each school calculated for all sports. Highest total gets the most money and on down the line. It ain't rocket science, and it's the way everything else works in the free world...

And, in addition to zipp’s comments, a system of this nature would force schools to direct more assets to sports that they suck in. If a school is “rewarded” for the success of it’s sports programs I can assure you that there will be more emphasis across the board by these schools.

Football makes significantly more money than any other sport (with the exception of men’s basketball at select schools). Seems like even more emphasis would be put on football to the exclusion of other sports.

How much of that is due to just TV rights alone. I mean if you're in a P5 conference...especially one with a TV deal...that money is just going to pour in all the time.

If you do the breakdown of total expenditures of football vs. basketball, I'd bet UofL football gets quite a bit of the athletic budget. You talk about 63 full scholarships vs. 13. Owning a 60k+ stadium vs. leasing an arena down town. Football coaches and support staff (HC, coordinators, QC, film, recruiting, training staff, tutoring, etc.) vs. a much smaller staff for basketball. Title 9 is the real enemy of programs being able to spend more on their breadwinners.

And it's not like you all don't spend money on football. The stadium and facility improvements have been top-notch. The football coaches have been able to pay high dollar for their staffs.

Well it actually is that way now. The payout to the 14 ACC schools was a little over 26 million this year while ND was paid a little over 10 million. 16 million compared to 10 million is a sizeable difference. When the ACC network gets rolling that difference will probably increase, I think. I say again that I wish ND would join the ACC in all sports, but that's above my paygrade. I disagree with the suggestion that all ND has of value is football. ND always does well in the Directors Cup (16th) which means they are competitive in many sports. Their Brand Name is nothing to sneeze at and their fans travel well too. JMHIO

You can also add that playing 5 ACC teams a year gives your teams a marquee matchup. How much in local revenue will be made from the Irish coming to Louisville over Labor Day weekend? The TV ratings for all the ACC home games will go towards the ACC/ESPN TV contract.

Even the road games...how much better is it to sell to recruits "we got a road game at Notre Dame coming up, along with going to Clemson & Florida state every other year."

Now that we have had a long ND/independence conversation, how is Louisville looking this fall?
I’ve got a much better idea of ND after the week at Culver & now back on campus.
So I’m more prepared to discuss how I think they will look Opening weekend.

The ACC as it stands has a hierarchy of schools financially. This is because of a variety of reasons, but mostly reflects investment in their athletics. No problem there. But in the marketplace, there should be a set of rules applicable to all. The free market doesn’t work effectively any other way. When one participant gets to play by a different set of rules from others, the free market has been thwarted. ND wants one foot in a Conference, one foot(ball) out, just because they can make more money that way. I am just saying that if they want to do that, fine. Just find another home for the non-football part of your athletics.

Again, rules apply to everyone. Outcomes do not.

We all live by the same set of laws in society. And our outcomes in life are all over the place, thankfully...

You shouldn't worry about this. The average tenure for a D1 college coach is 3.8 years as of 2017, this # probably hasn't changed much in the last couple years. If we've had 4 leave in 20 years, they are staying longer here than the average.

ND WR Michael Young hurt is shoulder today & wont play against UL.
He was having a great fall & was probably going to start as the third WR.
He actually had the same injury as the starting TE Cole Kmet.
So two offensive starters look to be out against UL.

That pre-season injury bug is something we are fearful of already. CSS has been truthful with us about the harm it could cause us into the season. But ND is loaded and deep.

ND was deep, but in addition to the injuries, the best WR on the roster,Kevin Austin, is also serving a Brian Kelly imposed suspension. So he won’t play either. So three receiving starters (Kmet, Austin, Young) will not play against UL.

As you can tell ND, we just aren’t sure about so many things. We never would have dreamed when the announcement was made of UL vs ND games that we would be in such unknown territory. I still kick myself for thinking ND in Nov, no thank you.

We MAY be a tad hesitant to engage in a discussion with any Indiana team. We had a pretty bad experience with Purdue football fans here when we went through our recent coaching search. :p There’s some sick puppies in that fan base.

Unfortunately 99% of Purdue posters make the 1% look bad. Irish are not quite that bad

Anyone prepared to throw out a score prediction yet?
You can change it with injuries. I know I’m rethinking mine after two receiving starters got hurt.

Cards score first 3 points of the game, then ND scores next 24 to lead 24-3 at half. Cards score two touchdowns in second half but ND wins going away 37-17

That’s a good prediction that Vegas would love since the line is 20.5
