ND at Louisville Discussion

As far as football goes.

ND leaves for Culver Military Academy today & starts practice tomorrow. I believe that is an open practice, but will have to check?

The only really big news out of Brian Kelly’s presser yesterday is the fact it looks like WR Kevin Austin (top 100 recruit a few years ago & probably ND’s most talented WR) will be serving an internal suspension the first four games the same way Dexter Williams did last year. He didn’t break any laws or do anything academically, but ND has internal rules for behavior that the staff will give out 4 game “suspensions” for. The players are eligible, will practice & even dress for the game, but will just stand on the sideline all game. Brian Kelly won’t even acknowledge there’s a suspension. Right now he’s talking about Austin the same way he did Willians last year, so seems to be a similar situation.

Notre Dame will not go into the B1G that was determined when they went into the ACC. Jim Delaney tried to lure them in but ND was not interested. There is a lot of tension between the B1G and ND because of past dealings.

Personally, I would love seeing ND fully in the ACC. Rockne wanted ND in the now Big 10 conference, but michigan and ohio state didn't want them in 1925. I think Rockne would jump at the opportunity to join the ACC. Generally most ND fans want ND to stay fully Independent in football. It's not about the money but tradition. If it were a money issue then ND would be in the ACC today. ND would be selling off it's stadium name, field name and other spots around campus and in the stadium to advertisers. I can also tell you that you'll never force ND into doing anything when it comes to the football program. You will never force that rare 800 pound white gorilla into any cage. Again, I think ND is missing out on a big opportunity by not joining the ACC yesterday. Yes I am a Kentuckian, Southern Baptist, and a preacher. There are many ND football fans here in my area in NW Kentucky. You don't have to be Catholic to be a huge ND fan by the way.
Thanks for your perspectives. ND shouldn't be "forced" to do anything. If that's in any way a strategy that the ACC uses, it's doomed to fail. IMO there should be an open dialogue on both sides to keep this issue up to date and relevant. It doesn't have to be public nor should it be.

It's kinda like U of L fans in basketball... Most aren't old enough to know firsthand about any "tradition". When a millennial says something to me about Denny Crum, I ask him what he would know about the subject that he hasn't read or seen on youtube. The same goes for many ND fans at this point. We all live in 2019, about to become 2020.

I wanna be open minded and totally fair about what ND fans and the institution have a right to expect. But as I said, I don't think that being the only independent in an organization of 65 schools has a long term future. At some point, it has to change. And you really don't wanna wait until the heat of a moment or a significant event to try to bring a complex plan together...

I will soon turn 66 so I'm not to concerned with 2037 right now. I will watch with interest what develops over the coming years. I am reasonably confident that as long as ND keeps it's deal with NBC (which runs through 2026) or another network, ND will not join the ACC full time. I think your program will hang with ND next month.

Never really felt any animosity towards ND myself - any ND fan I know is cool and I know a few. Their message posters have all been classy here and what I've read on the main board for years.

I’m curious if any Louisville fans on here know anything about the ND team they will be playing? I listened to an hour & a half podcast by our mods on Louisville & Satterfield & think I have a decent idea of the roster & coaching style. I just ask because a lot of times I will see various people on forums make posts about an opponent when they really don’t know much about them?

NDA, why don’t you educate us a little on your 2019-20 team.

I wish I could. I usually don’t try to make many updates until at least a couple weeks into Fall Camp. I could only give you generic info or my opinions right now, which really don’t mean much.

I'm Catholic and my father was a big ND fan. I was actually admitted to attend school there, so I have no anti-ND bias as some fans do.

But I'd almost rather discuss ND's future as an independent in football. If Domers wanna comment, is that still what a majority of the fanbase wants? And are there terms under which ND would join a football conference, the ACC or another?

I would think financials and contracts could be worked out. That's just about flexibility and how you divide the pie. What about schedule? Could ND and its fans be happy with just four OOC games? What if you could basically pick your eight conference opponents?

Let's get this thing figured out if there's a way for the ACC to make it happen!
If ND wants to join as a conference member, fine. But they must be treated as no more or no less important than any other member. I’m sick of special rules just for ND and special status. We went through this in the BE. Notre Dame could have saved that conference and didn’t. It made sense for them financially not to do so. As long as they have their own tv deal they won’t and shouldn’t join any conference

I don't believe all conference members are created equal, and that has nothing to do with ND. No way in hell Wake and BC deserve the same spoils of ACC membership as Clemson or Duke. When conference doormats and hanger-ons step up to the plate and generate a product that networks wanna buy as integral to their conference contracts, they deserve as much money.

In ND's case, they add value by their affiliation with the ACC, it needs to be quantified, and they need to receive it. That's capitalism even while we have pockets of socialism in the NCAA that doormats want to preserve...

Louisville has Brian Kelly's number. He couldn't beat Louisville when he was at UC and lost to Louisville the only time ND has played louis9 so I'm thinking Louisville has a good shot of upsetting ND.

I’m pretty sure UC beat UL very badly when Brian Kelly was at UC during their 12-0 regular season. So that’s not accurate.
Do you know anything about the ND team in 2014? LOL That was the year ND ended up giving up over 40 points a game the last 7 games when ND ended up with 9 true or Rs freshmen having to start on D after being decimated by injuries & suspensions & BVG as the new DC. I would take nothing from that season.

Well if you are going to make “excuses” for your 2014 team then I’ll claim the same ability to make “excuses” for our 2009 team. We had a horrible coach, season and situation at UofL. This was the year before Charlie Strong took over as head coach at UofL. And by the way, there are still some very hard feelings at Cincy for the way Brian Kelly left that team. They went on to get smashed/embarrassed by UF in the Sugar Bowl. That sure didn’t happen to UofL when we kicked UF’s ass in the same Sugar Bowl a few years later. The fact of the matter is that we beat ND at your place in 2014 in CBP’s first season back as UofL’s coach. I’m hoping that we can be competiive in our game on Sept. 2nd.

Brian Kelly is 2 and 4 vs Louisville. So not as one sided as i thought but still 2 and 4 is 2 and 4.

It’s not “excuses.”
It’s saying that cherry picking games here & there are pointless. They have nothing to do with the upcoming game. This is the same thing as Northwestern fans predicting a win last year at home because they also beat ND I’m South Bend in 2014. The 2014 season has NOTHING to do with the 2019 season.
And actually, no, there aren’t any hard feelings at Cincy. They are still pumped BK lead a mediocre team to a conference title & 12-0 regular season at a place that was below a .500 program historically before he got there. That conference title in a P5 Conference will never go away & they know it.
I think you are just trying to stir the pot now.

Would you agree that BK took over a very bad program at Cincy & turned them around pretty fast? Took them from a historically below .500 & led them to the conference title pretty fast.

As much as I would love for Louisville to best ND I don’t see it happening this year. The reality of the situation is that they are a good team this year and we are rebuilding. We will probably be rebuilding for a few years. I just hope we a respectable in our performance.

So I just looked it up.

2007 (BK 1st year at Cincy) Loss
2008 W
2009 (last year as Cincy coach) W

BK was 2-1 against UL as Cincy coach.

Actually, I think BK is a pretty good coach. But you are mistaken about the “hard feelings” in Cincy toward BK and the way he left them. But I’m not a Cincy fan either and they are a bunch of cry babies. Maybe a reason they are not in a P5 Conference.

Didn’t know much about the Irish, so I turned to our friend Google. 12-1 last year, loss to Clemson in final four. Outstanding. Return a lot on offense. QB mentioned as dark horse Heisman candidate. Strong receiver core. Return four starters on the line. Need to replace running back. Averaged 38 points last year under Chip Long. Defense replaces a lot. Returning strong pass rush. Should be a strong defensive unit, but several new faces. All of this stacks up to a very tall order for a Card unit looking for a new identity under new management. I want to see a big hearty effort, and no sign of quit. Expecting to win is not realistic, but what the heck...

Yeah, many feel this is the best offense Kelly has had at ND. They return four starters on the OL. They return all but one WR. They return two TEs. And at RB they actually return the day 1 starter from last year who missed most the season from a freak staph infection. ND actually averaged more rushing yards per game before Dexter Williams started game 5.
Defense is a mix. Three DL are expected to be drafted early next year, both safeties & one CB also expected to be drafted. But the other CB spot is open. All three LB spots are being competed for. The interior DL will rotate guys also. So six of the eleven spots on D will be very good, the other five are being competed for. Both the kicker & punter graduated. So special teams could be chaotic.

Yes there was hard feelings that BK took the ND job. If you remember the AD didn't want BK to coach the bowl game against Florida. Things like that happen when coaches move on to other schools. I just soon forget the 2014 season but the Cards did play a heck of a game in Notre Dame Stadium. It was the first hint that Coach Longo's S&C Program wasn't getting the job done. How could ND save the failing BE with so many quality teams leaving the conference? ND may not have fulfilled fans expectations but it did fulfill the agreement with the BE. Anyway it's history now. I'm looking forward to a really good game to start the season.

Actually, 2014 was UofL’s first season in the ACC. We opened the season here with a victory over UMiami. Our game with ND was to satisfy their ACC agreement. I respect ND’s desire to remain independent and understand it but it would be nice to have them as a football conference member. Maybe someday.

ND success last year, returning talent and coaching make it hard for even the most optimistic Cards fans to predict a win. Not too dissimilar an opener compared to last year vs. Bama. I do expect us to have shining moments on Labor Day and look markedly better than we finished last year. And I expect us to have surprise with wins this year. Just not this early in the season.

NDA, I thought you didn’t want to share what you weren’t sure of until a couple weeks into opening camp. ;)

That is about generic as I can make it.
Like I said above, there are a lot of openings being battled for so I have no idea who will be starting in those positions.
I talk to people, listen to the podcasts & read all the reports, so I have a pretty good idea, & of course my opinions, but like said, it doesn’t mean much. LOL

If you ask me my opinion I can provide that, but I’m no expert.

Today’s first practice was open, so did learn a little about a few question marks.

You’re in or you’re out. If you’re in, then there are no classes of membership, just as there are no classes of citizenship. “Bottom feeders” don’t have the same financial rewards as more successful schools, nor should they. But with respect to conference membership, “affiliation” doesn’t add value. Let ND park their other sports in the Missouri Valley if they want to. By agreeing to the current arrangement we are simply perpetuating it.

It’s been clearly documented that the agreement has benefitted the ACC. You think the ACC would agree to the contract if it didn’t? You just sound bitter.

Nope. Just a guy who likes justice. I don’t know what has been “clearly documented”. I do know that ND absolutely benefits from ACC membership. It seems to me that ND gets it both ways. They get their big money TV deal as an independent in football, and gets the value of membership in a P5 conference for everything else except hockey. The real value is in football. They keep that to themselves. Fine- it’s a free market. Understand the the ACC ONLY does this in hopes of someday getting football. I don’t like that. Join or don’t.

Looks like ND’s most talented WR, Kevin Austin, will not be playing due to internal team suspension.
Two years ago it was standout WR Stepherson, last year was best RB Williams. Both didn’t get reps in fall practice & stood on sidelines in pads first four games of each season & didn’t play.
So far Austin has stood on the sideline & received zero reps among the rumors he will miss the first 4 games. So it’s safe to say he won’t be playing against Louisville.

After we beat (unranked) ND in South Bend in October of 2014, we were excited to one day have Notre Dame make the return trip to play in Cardinal Stadium. It was a big moment in our program's history, even though it was not a great ND squad by their standards, losing 5 of their last 7 games after rising to a #5 ranking. We thought we would be riding high at this point in our football program's trajectory with the return of Bobby Petrino. It doesn't make sense to diminish the profile of ND football now that the game is nearly here and things haven't exactly turned as we expected for OUR program since October of 2014. We WANT high profile teams such as ND on our schedule for the opportunity it brings to achieve on a national stage. ND has been at the highest levels of college football and still maintains a very high profile in today's college football landscape. It's just sad that our program is trying to recover from a monumental collapse over the last year and a half as we ready to meet up again. But we will have other chances against ND. Notre Dame has nationally televised games guaranteed on NBC scheduled through 2029, including games against Louisville in 2020, 2023, and 2026. Let's just hope WE progress to the point where it's TWO high profile teams meeting up down the road.

The question is do you think Satterfield sticks around? I think he is a really good coach and will succeed at Louisville. But will he after that?

And you care why? If this is “really” a ND at Louisville discussion why do you want to get rhetorical on us????

This started out ok but is starting to have an easterly stench to it.

There is simply no way to know that. This is his first P5 coaching opportunity. You can never predict what a coach will do once he has success and other offers come his way. Will he stay to maintain and increase what he has built, or does he like the allure of higher profile jobs or even the challenge rebuilding other programs. Just know way to ever know.

Settle down there.
If you have read posts before you will see that a lot of people at ND like Satterfield a lot & think he has a big future ahead.

It’s not getting rhetorical at all. There is no stench except for what you are implying. You are getting too deep into your own head trying to find something negative when nothing negative has been said.

Any why do I care? I’ve posted on this very board that ND had him on their short list of coaches to replace Brian Kelly when he leaves.

I didn't realize we play each other that often over the next seven years? Win or lose I think that's great for Louisville and Notre Dame. I hope the Lord leaves me around to enjoy them. I really like the ACC agreement for making these football games possible.

I worry about Satterfield building our program up and leaving. More than likely to North Carolina after 4 years. If he does leave because he is that good that would mean our program will be in good shape. If he does leave I wish him luck because that Louisville curse will probably make him wish he never left.
