I listened briefly to the ACC Channel Crew, as there were unanimous in their pre-game prediction that UL would prevail, primarily on the belief that Malik was “that special”. I suppose our optimism could be excused given the “so called experts” shared our encouragement.
I try to avoid over-reacting during the games, and as well as after a bad loss, but the debacle we all witnessed last night cannot be explained without some insight into what this staff and roster were doing since the Bowl Loss last year. This was undoubtedly the worst preparation that I can recall.
Aside from our defensive backs lining up and missing assignments, the number of missed tackles was the most inexcusable performance that I can recall from a UL football team in my memory. Preston Brown was on the sideline and commented about how tired the kids were early on, despite playing in an air-conditioned stadium. Perhaps poor pre-season conditioning can explain the slowness, and lack of execution; either way this is on the staff.
I minimized some of my colleagues who have been so critical of Satterfield‘s play calling, but it was definitely on full display, and it contributed to the humiliating performance. Malik‘s decision making was equally as poor, and any of that early preseason suggestion that he was more mature, was clearly proven wrong. It was not so much about the one of his two interceptions, or the two fumbles, but rather his poor pocket presence where he continually tried navigating into the rush, rather than moving outside of it. The very few successful escapes he experienced from the defensive pressure, were a result of his going outside where he had greater vision and could use his speed.
Satterfield may have lost the fanbase last night, as I may have just joined that disillusioned crowd too.
