This is apparently a pretty scary situation for Mauldin. Best wishes for a quick and complete recovery.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Lorenzo Mauldin, a former University of Louisville football captain in his first season as a linebacker for the New York Jets, suffered a neck injury while fighting to recover a fumble in his first NFL regular-season game and has been transported to an area hospital, according to CBS.
Mauldin sacked Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and forced a fumble, but then appeared to injure his head or neck during a scramble for the ball, during which a number of players fell on his head.
Mauldin tried to get to his feet after the play, then collapsed to the turf.
As trainers and medical personnel worked with Mauldin, teammates surrounded him, some on one knee, praying. He was immobilized, placed onto a spinal board and carted off the field in front of a silent MetLife Stadium crowd. He was down for about five minutes before being carted off.
