In hindsight, UL fans (at least this one) failed to appreciate just how devastating Mack’s decision was to terminate Dino and Murray prior to the 2021-22 season. Evidently, it was in concert with his strategy to hire McMains, and introduce the international fast offense with emphasis on finding an open three early in the shot clock. That required attracting transfers who had demonstrated 40% efficiency at D1 level. Locke, Cross, Faulkner and West each appeared to have fit that model.
In the absence of seeing any actual on the floor execution, it sounded like a rather compelling strategy for UL basketball; as the expectation was high scoring entertainment. I bought in and spent the first 6 or 7 games hoping to see it materialize …….. there were a just a very few instances where I saw it exhibited in a couple of games. The key words here are “few” and “couple”; in reality, it never played out any where close to what Mack must have envisioned.
I can only imagine how Mack must have felt enormous pressure after the disappointing 2020-21 season, to take such a dramatic chance in the off-season. Mack essentially scrapped the very basketball philosophy that had been so successful at Xavier, and had led him to UL.
