I am definitely holding out on my earlier ill-informed opinion on how bad Joihnny Jones is as a coach. The LSU team we watched last night did absolutely everything right, including having Simmons play facilitator to the other guys who were owning it. I loved the traps they sprung and their gritty rebounding, especially in the person of Quartermann and Victor. They looked very tough-minded and fluid as hell. Ha ha, and then the Kraken - Simmons - takes over. What a freaking talent that guy is.
LSU seems to have overcome the presence of so many new players, meshing now following a brutal OOC schedule and an awful lot of seeing-eye dog thrashing and then help. That many freshmen, the addition of Ornsby and Victor to the lineup spell a very improved and smoother team going forward. There was absolutely nothing in that game last night that says UK should win even at Rump.
At the same time, UK is finding it rough going life on the road - a big mystery in what was supposed to be a weak conference. Suddenly, the brutality of Calipari's rebounding teachings show up in a raft of correctly-called fouling. Poythress' and the undertalented Lee's troglodyte over the back thug life is not allowed like the fans have come to expect in Rump Arena.
With Avery Johnson probably beginning to raise Bama's hoops profile, the rise of LSU as a team, Vandy's 7 footers and excellent team, Florida's general consistency (I know little about them), South Carolina under martin now unbeaten, UK is facing what could well be a 5th place finish as their weaknesses prevail and become obvious.
It angers UofL fans a little because the team we watched win against us will most certainly be the best game of UK's season in retrospect. But no complaining from here. It's over. They will relish the win over us as never before, of course. That's how desperation operates. I just find it fascinating to watch teams who scout UK and who compete in conference exposing them so radically. That did not look like a top 20 team.2 great players and nothing else at all, with a coach whose studly acumen allowed a 6'3" player to guard the tallest player on the floor. LOL, that was a mismatch 100% of the time it was engaged. You just can't beat an automatic mismatch in basketball, lol, especially against the game's best player.
Funny stuff.
