League Office Intervened to Have Officials Call Facemask?

Last night while driving back to Cincinnati after the game I heard a 970 radio announcer say that ACC officials in Charlotte intervened to force the game officials to call a facemask on Cunningham after he was thrown into the wall on the JMU sideline. Supposedly they contacted the referee as Louisville was lining up for first and goal after the flagrant penalty was called on the defender. Satterfield said in postgame show that he was going to call league to find out more.

The officials clearly missed Malik putting his hand into the defender’s facemask as he was trying to stiff arm him. But that’s not reviewable. What rule would allow the league to stop play and order a reversal of a call that can’t be reviewed? Did I misunderstand something? Did the announcers on the ESPNU broadcast explain what happened?

The guys on TV said that because the call was a FLAGRANT personal foul on the JMU kid, it made the play reviewable. I have no idea whether that's true or not.

Obviously, personal fouls for targeting are reviewed in just about every game. This "is it reviewable" question is sort of irrelevant IMO and is probably only being voiced by U of L fans because of the result. The refs ended up getting the call right...

Malik does things like this. He does what he can to get extra yards via feigning late hits. Watch him next game. If he gets run out of bounds by or on the opposing sideline, he’ll flop, fall, slip, etc.. Part of the game.

In the end, I think they got the call right. That's the important thing. I am just glad it did not get ugly over on the sideline. SS said after the game that if you get thrown out of a game you have to sit out the next game also,
Fortunately, Sherman and Chandler who were the first guys to get there were just trying to get Cunningham out of there.

I have now witnessed firsthand 4 specific events where Malik has been the victim of either targeting, a late hit or unnecessary roughness that were never called, some of which were not even reviewed.

The ACC officials should be reviewed much closer by an independent (non ACC a people) analysis.

It is almost impossible to determine why Malik grabbed the face mask. He may of been using it for leverage to keep his balance. He may of been trying to rip the kids head off. That isn’t the point. The point is their player drove him to the wall. That was the penalty. That was the call.

Reviews have gotten out of hand. There is a very clear rule you don’t use replay to find and assign penalties that were missed. The ACC has opened pandora’s box. It was stupid to set this precedence. No problem with reviewing it and deciding not to throw the guy out. Assessing a penalty to Malik in a situation where there is a good chance he is just protecting himself is silly.

Reviews are another reason why I don’t like attending games. I go to all home games but can’t stand all the reviews. They need the pro model.

Ever since UCONN took that fair catch punt to the house to win a game in that old Big East I've pretty much lost faith in the legitimacy of officiating. What for years I thought was just incompetence feels like it's beyond just that.

I don't know about this specific play. But I cannot recall any crazy calls going the way for the Cards, but can recall many going against. Is it just bias? Let me know when refs put time back on the clock at the end of the half for us to kick a FG. Feel free to point out any break we get moving forward. I'm totally open-minded.

I think teams are taking shots at MC to get him out of the game. They know UL has very little experience at QB behind MC.

It is ridiculous how low the simplest of reviews take. Have a guy at the League Office review the play and communicate to the referee. It cracks me up the referee has to run over to the sideline, and then he ends up looking at the play on this tiny monitor on the sideline. At least a guy in the office would have a bigger screen.

I think they are told to take a long look even though they can make a valid decision in a few seconds. They want to make it look like they are being thorough and non bias even when they get it wrong.
