Konno

I know they can’t really tell us anything, I just thought she was playing really well a few games back.

I just listened to the post game presser with CJW and he said Kono is out because of health issues. He didn’t say what they were but once she was better she would rejoin the team.

Which is what he said in the postgame presser. Just health issues. He also mentioned Olivia had a stomach ache and wasn't at full strength.

Any update on “Nikki” a/k/a Norika Konno?
Hope she is okay. She is very valuable to this team.

I don’t know what illness or health situation she might have but she has been gone for awhile. I hope if it is Covid she recovers with no side affects. Asia Duerr has it bad and has some complications with it afterwards.

Asia returned to play several months ago, thankfully

I’m hearing Konna had a serious knee injury, don’t know if this is true or not.

Hasn't our play by play guy asked Jeff about Konno in pre-game or post-game interviews ?

She had a previous knee issue as well - if that is i deed the issue.

I don’t know if this is the case but sometimes they keep certain injuries quiet so It won’t affect possible draft status in the future. If she indeed has a knee injury that required surgery that is something that could have a negative effect on her future if she desires to play pro sports. Years ago Wesley Cox who played for Louisville had asthma and there were times in high school and college where he would walk off the court during a game. People thought he just had a bad attitude and they used to boo him. They never let it be known it had asthma so it wouldn’t hurt his draft status if he was NBA talent.

Not sure that would apply in Konno’s situation. I think other than Covid, you may have to disclose injuries. Before the last game, he specifically said they had no major injuries.

Maybe Covid hit her in a major way like it did Asia she had to sit out the rest of the season when she caught it.

One lingering symptom of Covid is fatigue. I have had both Covid and Omicron; very few symptoms other than incredible fatigue. Not so much with Omicron, but the Covid in 2020 kept me in bed as a result of extreme fatigue for 3 weeks. I suspect Konno is a victim as well, that prohibits any physical exertion. UL‘s strength & conditioning folks will do everything possible to keep her healthy.

If this is true, I certainly respect the privacy issue but I also think it is a disservice to the public to let people know that young, healthy athletes can be and are affected by Covid. Education or lack of education is why this thing won’t go away.

Federal law prohibits entities like employers and schools from disclosing personal health information. At my last employer, which was a private company, we got regular training that we could not seek personal health information from our subordinates or coworkers and, if we came into such information, we couldn’t disclose it to anyone.

Not if the individual voluntarily provides the information. I still think the upside of understanding how a young healthy athlete has more severe side effects than other people is more important than being afraid of other people finding out it. It only helps to understand what you’re up against. It’s not like she’s the only one. Even people with cancer disclose their situation.

Even if releasing information on Norika’s situation was acceptable by law, it is possible that the information is being withheld due to respect for a cultural difference. I spent over 25 years flying around the world with a good bit of time in Asia and the Middle East. The cultural differences between east and west are significant, and something that we can sometimes overlook. We tend to be more open in many ways in the west, but eastern cultures tend to be more reserved and guarded. Perhaps the university is not releasing information simply out of respect for Konno’s Japanese culture and practice. If so, I have incredible respect for that!

Regardless of the circumstances, I fervently hope she will be able to regain her health, strength, and stamina and return to the team and game that she so clearly loves.
