Kamari Lands in Portal

And so it begins. His comments see to indicate that it was mutual between him and the staff. WTH? The kid has a long way to go, but he’s one of the few with potential.

I was on the fence with Lands. He seemed to be sort coming into his own on offense late in the season but I wasn't going to be heartbroken if he decided to leave. I wish him luck going forward.

Plus Cards are adding Glenn and Williams so the SF spot is full.

Lands: “I have nothing but love for you guys. With that being said the staff and I have come to the mutual decision to part ways.”

I think people will be more upset with certain players staying than leaving.
I agree... lol..
I was not enamored with Lands. I didn't think he was a 'Must keep" player.. and also feel like his role was going to be replaced...
This whole season has been tramatic for just about EVERY player on the team.
Was the same last year, even more so. Think about what went down last year.
  • Trusted assistant coaches get fired after COVID season where head coach was absent for a few games and assistants had to take over
  • 1 Assistant goes "all Soprano" on the head coach which leaks out to the press and to the players.
  • Now Head coach has to bring in new Assistants, and Coach is under fire for firing the previous assistants, NCAA violations, and 13-7 season...
  • 1st 6 games, team plays like they are on fire for the new assistants while head coach has to literally be away from the team
  • Meanwhile Univ President leaves, Head coach comes back and team plays up and and down, un-inspired.
  • Head coach leaves after skipping the UK game and getting SMASHED by WKU
    • SIDE NOTE: Mannn it feels good to have our worst team in HISTORY beat Clemson, GT and WKU, 3 programs who have either embarrassed on the court (WKU last year, and Clemson, back in 2015 or 16 on the road) or on the football field...
  • Team literally has a 10-12 game losing streak to close out the season... like digging a hole that they never dug themselves out of.

So now, for this season, we bring back 3 role players (Ellis, Curry, Traynor) and a player who should have been more than a role player, in Withers.... and the expectation was for those guys to not be shell shocked by last year or new coaches...

I am really expecting Curry to be overseas. I am expecting Withers and Traynor to go as well. But I really expect them dudes to be playing at a Mid-major school...
I also expect some more departures... and honestly... I am ready for it... I don't really want to see any of these guys back. We need clean minds, clean hands... new looks...

He'll probably turnout to be a stud for some team that actually has a coach to teach him..
what stood out to me is that for a 6'8" dude, he never played to HIS potential at all. He was a serviceable but not dynamic ball handler... and he never used his length as an advantage. His release is near his face and not above his head... which means it is very blockable, and the only time he shot over defenders was at the end of the shot clock for desperation heaves...
1.9 rebounds per game . at 6'8" ont only speaks to his desire to play on the perimeter but also his lack of desire for contact. He, like everybody on the team not named Mike, played like they didn't want to get injured, so that they could transfer out. Lands will learn quickly, that the crap he did on defense don't float...
Lack of rebounding fake swipes and half-hearted reaches is the type of stuff that keeps freshmen on the bench...
Thats that James Harden type mentality. I think the article in CJ mentioned "MUTUAL AGREEMENT" which means KP probably told him, "If this is the effort I get from you, don't come back".
Like I mentioned before... we will probably see a lot of defections..

I never knew Lands was 6'8". I thought he was 6'6" or around Mike James height. I honestly couldn't tell.

I think all the defections are tied to effort and defense not offense. You can make an argument to keep almost everyone base off offense skill. On the effort and defensive end it hard to argue keeping anyone.

Effort and defense next year are non negotiable.

Payne might have told him he wasn't going to play as much next year. I'm not sure how good Glenn is I know their star ratings were similar but Glenn looks stronger on film and I have no facts when I say this but I believe he's just better than Lands. It's also possible Payne thinks he's getting Flowers and he'll reclassify, or he might think he can get a better SF in the portal if he's not getting Flowers. There's also Fr Williams. These are all speculative guesses.

Are UK teams known for their offense or defense? Based on this season, did it look like this team focused on offense or defense? He let Ellis, Withers, James do whatever they wanted on offense but what did they defensively? We couldn't defend the pick and roll. He's going to have a different makeup but unless the new guys come in as defensive wizards, it's going to be more of the same. You coach what you know.
