Interesting +/- in these last 2 games

Wow who would’ve thought Perry and Kimble aren't a championship caliber backcourt. It’s mind boggling at this point if DJ doesn’t start Wednesday. Starters should be DJ Perry Nwora Sutton and Malik. Period. I don’t think Perry would have the stomach to handle coming off the bench at this point and he’s a better shooter then Kimble so he should be starting next to DJ and Malik has clearly been better then Enoch. You want to fix slow starts you play your best guys.

When you’re desperate you try anything...not.

The resistance to start Johnson is becoming head scratching. Nobody thinks he is < than Kimble at this juncture. You can get away with bringing a superior player off the bench if you have a lineup consisting of a couple studs. Easier to hide the inferior player and maybe even a wise move to pair the inferior player with the studs, keep the stronger player with 2nd unit that doesn't consist of the studs.

But this team has 0 studs. The guy is entering games with the team down 7 points minimum most nights, at least that's the recent trend.

That said, he isn't going to fix everything. But he could help some struggling players get going with his ability to get to the paint.

We'll see. Lots of game left.

Would someone be so kind and explain these OP tweet stats to me? I thought I understood but apparently not based on some posts following. TIA

+/- is the difference between their team's total scoring versus their opponent's when the player is in the game.

This is obviously a very small sample because it's only 2 games.

But what it's saying is Kimble/Perry combination of playing together has been the worst backcourt combination in terms of how the scoreboard has moved negatively for the Cards the last couple of games, compared to the other backcourt combinations used.

Again, super small sample here. It just points to the "slow start" theory many have discussed.

Someone did a similar thing when the Cards were on a 8 game streak heading to 10. Similar results except that McMahon was pretty much the common factor in positive numbers with different combinations and Perry was the common denominator in negative numbers. However, as a coach I don’t know what you do with it over a small span of games.

Perry is an example of talent not equaling a fit.

He was a good 4 star talent when he came in and had some nice skills. He’s athletic and does many things well but nothing great. He really just hasn’t developed an identity to his game.

He was brought in by Rick to be a point guard who would just help pressure and push pace. Rick had a way of getting through to those type of players for his system. Guys found their role or left. They had a part to play.

Darius just isn’t a fit on this team for what it needs. I think at times he can be engaged on defense and play well, but that’s it for now. We NEED him to be a pure point, but it’s just not looking like that’s who he can be right now.

Im hoping next year, he can play more off the ball with DJ on the court. I think he can split some ball handling duty and DJ can be the playmaker. Plus if Sam makes a jump it can work better.

Darius seems like he’d be a great complementing piece as a guard off the bench or a 3rd guard starting, but when your guard play to begin with is lacking, he really doesn’t add much.

Ryan can stretch a defense and is a threat to hit a shot from anywhere. DJ can flat out make plays. Fresh can score, not an amazing scorer but he can get a bucket. Sam has upside and I feel confident when he shoots the ball. What is Darius’ role at this moment?

Not trying to be too funny but his role is to score the 1st basket of the game and... that’s about it. Play pressure defense on the opponent’s best ball handler. That’s all I got.

Lefors, you make a good point about Perry fitting in with Pitino style ball. I so hoped that Perry would finally blossom into what I thought he could be this year. But I never considered the different systems.

why can’t he play off he ball with DJ now?

I just think a lot of it is due to chemistry at the moment and the timing of DJs injury.

Perry had a full year with Mack. Then started off the pre season and season as the lead guard when DJ was hurt. DJ has slowly worked his way into the lineup the last month.

DJ is a great athlete and scorer. Him missing that time wasn’t a big deal for his skill, but as a freshman it was a time Mack could’ve worked with him on running the offense and developing chemistry with the other guys.

DJ as a sophomore will be amazing. He will have a year of playtime and another summer to get strong, faster, and in better shape. He can fine tune his game and we can have our offense/rotation better set to start the year.

Remember at the start of January, our rotation was pretty well set before DJ forced his way in and Perry just showed he can’t play PG in the ACC. We’ve basically in one month scrapped our first 2 months of the season (plus practice) and are having to change on the fly.

Rick’s whole system/style was his eye for talent. He could just pick out a guy he wanted for his team and knew what to do to get them to fit.

And that’s why I’m not too hard on Mack right now. Winning a title and playing at an elite level for a whole year requires a roster that fits and chemistry. We have a lot of good players and we are winning, but we just have that missing flow right now. Mack is trying to push the right buttons to get it to work.

Think about Russ. He would’ve been good most anywhere, but the staff got the call and Rick just knew what to do with him once he got here.

I feel bad for Deng Adel and Q because I think they really were due for big years before Rick left. But that era is over.

Rick definitely didn't know what to do with Russ Smith. Russ was definitely a challenge personally for Rick and the bond they established made Rick change his ways of thinking. He adapted to Russ and coined the phrase, 'russidiculous'. Rick would have never allowed another player to go 1 on 4 and score.

He's definitely one of my all time favorites. I still can't understand why he can't get an on an NBA roster.

Very hard to believe he couldn’t get a legit shot, plenty of players have excelled at his height.

I wish we had another Russ, but I don’t think we’ll ever see another like him.

Those 3 guys you mentioned are seriously multi talented point guards. Not many scoring guards at that size. NBA guards are so tall and athletic that it makes it hard to be a small scoring guard. But russ is making money and doing what he loves.... so not all bad

Rick allowed Russ to play through his mistakes. In the NBA, unless you’re a top pick, you just don’t get that much rope.

6 foot shooting guards are very rare. It’s very hard to make it in the NBA. There are a lot of good players who can play in the NBA, but do teams want to invest in them long term?

There’s a ton of guys who could get a check being at the end of a bench and Russ is as good as any of them, but a team may think some young athletic freak with potential or veteran that used to be good may be more worth it. Best players in the world, very tough to make it for long.

what else could it be? Russ can score and play d
The right opportunity, right team, right coach never presented itself. Happens a lot. Still believe he could have played and contributed to some team. Of course, I don’t think he would have been happy sitting on a NBA bench so he was able to go overseas, make a ton of money and be Russ. All good for him, not so much for fans who loved to watch him play.

I would love to see him in that Houston offense D’Antoni runs.

ah yes, right place at right time is what you were getting at, that definitely makes a difference.

Perry is a Pitino guard. Perfect for the full court press
