2016 Louisville (Ky.) Male wide receiver has been a name on the recruiting scene since after his freshman when he obtained an offer from Kentucky. The legend continued into his sophomore season when he really blossomed into the big-play wide out he is today.
Over the years Wakefield picked up several other offers -- Indiana, Illinois, Cincinnati and WKU. And, of course, on Tuesday the Louisville Cardinals offered the 5-foot-9 prospect. An offer that has been long awaited and, at times, seemed it wouldn't happen.
Rewind a year, Wakefield camps with the Cardinals as a rising junior. He has a good camp and expected some interest and possibly an offer to come of out it. Well long story short nothing ever came from it. Ron, Keion's father, even reached out to the coaching staff to gauge interest and there was none.
There were no plans for Wakefield to camp with Louisville as a rising senior and he was albeit done looking the Cardinal's way. Then he received a direct message via Twitter from wide receiver coach Lamar Thomas inviting him to camp.
Wakefield had another big day at Louisville and offensive coordinator Garrick McGee was so impressed after Monday's camp he let it be known an offer was in the works. McGee scheduled a meeting for the next day, this time Bobby Petrino was involved. And before the day was over, the offer was tendered.
After offering, Louisville shoots up to the top of his list. He really likes what is happening with their program right now and the direction it's heading. And he also loves the fact that it's home. Lastly, he believes the way they get the ball to playmakers will benefit him, if he chooses the Cards.
Honestly, I believe the Cardinals will beat out all the teams he currently has on his offer sheet, if it stays the same.
However, it may not remain that way. If the Cards should be worried about anyone it should be Tennessee. Wakefield loved his time in Knoxville when he visited there. A family feel has always been important to him during his recruitment and he said he felt it more there than anywhere so far.
Wakefield will camp with the Volunteers on Thursday and a lot more will be known about his recruitment after it. As he told Petrino, at the end of this week he'll have talk with his father and a decision could be made.
