If there isn't a statue unveiled during the UK game.... Or add his name to the stadium. It wouldn't have been built if not for him. It's past time to act. The complex was nice, but he deserves more, imo.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville Athletics has announced the 2021 football promotional calendar, which includes an array of special events, a number of special tributes, and the celebration of former head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

The Cardinals will remember the career of Schnellenberger, who passed away on March 27, 2021. The former head coach led the Cardinals for 10 seasons (1985-94) and guided the program to a pair of bowl wins. The Cardinals defeated No. 25 Alabama 34–7 in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, capping a 10–1–1 season and the school's then-highest appearance in the final AP poll (14th). The Fiesta Bowl appearance was the school's first-ever New Year's Day bowl game.

The team will wear a helmet sticker for the entire season to commemorate Coach's accomplishments, and the season opener versus Eastern Kentucky will feature a moment of silence and a video tribute to the former head coach. Plans for a larger celebration at the Kentucky game will include an appearance from Beverlee Schnellenberger, the wife of the former UofL coach, and the presentation of the Howard Schnellenberger Award, which is given to the Most Valuable Player from either a UK or UofL player.

The complete promotional schedule is listed below:

Ok, so is this a troll move doing the national champions celebration when UCF comes to town?! (Remember their claimed title a few years ago lol) If so, bravo Cards PR staff.

Hmmmmmm a statue? I certainly appreciate what HS did for UofL football and I believe the complex being named for him was very appropriate, but enough is enough. Let us remember that he chose to leave UofL, not the other way around. Let’s not go overboard, please.

GO CARDS!!!

For the sake of argument, where would the statue go?

He left for what was a slap in the face by moving to CUSA on account of basketball. Let’s just agree to disagree.

Yes we will just have to agree to disagree. HS left because he allowed his ego to get in the way. He admitted that years later. The CUSA was the best move for UofL at the time because we couldn’t have survived as a major independent. I’m a football guy but basketball was paying the athletic department’s bills and that had to come first. HS just couldn’t deal with being in second place behind basketball. Today we are in the ACC because of our past basketball success and that membership has and will strengthen our football program along with each and every athletic program at the University. The ACC is, by far, the most important thing that has ever happened to UofL athletics. I’m not sure that would have ever happened if we hadn’t gone to the various conferences over the years. Thankful for Tom Jurich and his aggressive facility building projects during his tenure. Those facilities made us ready for a major conference like the ACC..

Howard was great for UL Football Cardwiz, no one will ever minimize his accomplishments here. However, GOCDS explained Howard’s hasty decision to leave UL for Oklahoma perfectly, after Howard lost an argument with the Administration over their belief that independent status was short-sighted; something anyone can see in hindsight was not only correct, but was most providential for our future.

Over the years, Howard was the first to acknowledge that he was wrong, and his decision to leave UL was one of the very few professional mistakes that he made in his life.

I see your points, and I do recall him saying he made the mistake. I guess we can make valid points in both sides. I just feel that he deserves more recognition than he has been given. Even though the complex is named after him it’s covered up by the end zone addition. I would like to visually see something of unique significance when inside the stadium.

I do understand your position on HS and maybe that’ll happen. But with that being said I’d love to see something with Tom Jurich’s name on it as well. Maybe Ton Jurich field, etc.

Howard left in a huff, and ended up at Oklahoma. He tried to change their team to his offense. I believe he lasted two years. His ego blinded reality.

While I like Gary Nord a lot; as Howard’s OC at Oklahoma, he contributed mightily to the early fan anger directed towards Howard, by making some rude comments that were received as insulting. It was a horrible fit from the start …….a HC with strong urban roots in a largely rural based following was a tuff obstacle to overcome.

As I remember, Gary Nord said something about all of the one tooth women in Oklahoma. That went over like a pregnant lead balloon. 🙄😎
