Two words, Basketball IQ.
Basketball IQ sums up every single deficiency that this team has.
Defense - Too many times is a PG driving and we have the SF/PF pull off to play help defense, when in reality, the Center and our Guard are both there. This leads to a wide open 3 by the opponents wing guard. Spalding was a perfect example today where Allen drove the lane, Spalding played off his man and Tatum drains a wide open 3. Adel and King do the same thing.
Offense - This is one thing I dont understand. I dont know what Pitino is saying to them......or not saying to them. Somehow they just dont understand that we are a powerhouse paint team and a drive and kick team. Spot up 3's are not our thing, ESPECIALLY when we aren't shooting well. When we missed our first few wide open 3's, but had success inside, that should have told the whole team the gameplan. We finish with like 48-50 points in the paint, when it should have been 58-60+. But, we chose to keep shooting ourselves into a slump with 4-21 behind the arc.
Transition Defense - We are really good at transition defense when either, A. The guard drives the lane. Or B. We get back and force a halfcourt offense.
We are horrible at defending transition spot up shooters. A perfect example today was the Luke Kennard transition 3. Got the rebound, Kennard comes up, Mahmoud turns his back and bam, Kennard with the spot up 3.
You guys say that we are bad at FT's, and while I do 100% agree, FT's it does not matter if we shoot 10/20 ft's if our Basketball IQ for our Offense and Defense are there. One thing I will say about FT's is that our guards should not miss as many as they do. However, if the offense and defensive IQ's are fixed, then FT's aren't a big issue, at all.
