Easy schedule nets only 6 wins against P5 competition.
Trying to force Lamar into a pure pocket passer and nin -existant running game
was this years downfall.

This year should have been about getting Jawon ready to take over.
Cards struggled to put teams away, thus having 1st in at the end of games.

The great recruiting news was negated by poor exhibition bowl game against a
Coachless team. Anemic playcalling led to Lamar playing the whole game.

Georgia let go of Richt, and now theyre in the CFP.
Bring in Brohm and the Cards can win the Atlantic.

Stay with Petrino and its 9 wins-max.
Way to much talent to finish 8-5.

What say you.

Give Bobby P 2 more years. If we haven’t gotten a 10 win season and NY6 bowl by then try and get Brohm. U of L is set up very very well for 2019 as it stands with roster personnell. Jawon will be in his second year in the system, the only receivers we lose other than Jaylen are easily replaceable (Peete and Samuel). The defense will be loaded with experience after a year of growing pains with a whole new starting line up. Clemson will still be good, but breaking in a new QB again. FSU may be down because I was less than impressed with Taggart’s year at Oregon. Probably will be starting a lot of Freshmen. Wake, NC State, Syracuse should all be back to bottom feeding based on what they lose in the next 2 years.

2018 will be a rough year. 8 wins is hopeful. If we somehow pull off 9, I am expecting 2019 will be a playoff run.

I’m not sure I agree with you about the defense being loaded with experience.

I am at work on the night shift with nothing to do so I did a mock depth chart for 2018. The defense has only 1 Senior that will likely contribute anything (Dee Smith) and 1 Redshirt Junior that may bolt for the draft (Greenard). The rest of the guys should likely be back in 2019. So you are looking at anywhere from 8-10 starters coming back barring any surprises. I would link here but I don't think rivals can have Excel documents.
The 1st team defense will look about like this.
CBs: PJ Mbanasor R Jr and Rodjay Burns R So, possibly Russ Yeast So
SS: Dee Smith Sr, possibly PJ Blue R So
FS: Tresean Smith So, possibly Trenell Troutman Fr, Lyn Strange or Rod Owens if Smith is coming back from injury to start the season all would be Fr or So.
MLB: Dorian Etheridge So, possibly Isaac Stewart R Sr or Robert Hicks Fr
OLBs: Khane Pass R Jr, CJ Avery So, Possibly Quen Head Jr, Malik Staples Jr, or Yassir Abdullah Fr
DEs: Mike Boykin R So and Jon Greenard R Jr
DTs: GG Robinson R Jr and Jared Goldwire R So

A lot of these guys except Dee Smith, Isaac Stewart and maybe Jon Greenard will return for 2019. That will be a lot of experience. 8-10 Starters.

I appreciate all of this research.

I understand the concept, and I like the positive attitude. That said, there is no way we can really project these type of things 2 yrs in advance given potential injuries, transfers, dismissals, etc...

Very true. We just have to hope there are no unfortunate injuries, or bad apples. I see no reason for people to transfer though because the spots are wide open. And being 2nd string is nothing to transfer over.

What will show most will be what your DC and O-line coach can accomplish. Usually the second year, especially the second half of that year is where you can tell if their coaching and schemes are showing benefit.

A “C” I guess. This team seemed to underachieve most of the year but I sure do appreciate the way they finished, including the effort today. And the 44-17 waffle-stomping in Lexington was priceless.

This is a really hard year to grade.

Purdue-W looks better today
Clemson-L manhandled wasn't expected but understandable
NC State-L tough spot, good team, had a chance to win late.
FSU-W on the road always a good thing.
Wake-L on the road proved to be a really good offense.
BC-L game they should have won.
Syracuse-W dominated
Virginia-W dominated
UK W-dominated
Miss State-Loss, tough game should have won going away.

The only 2 games that really stick out are the Wake and BC games. Both were bad performances. The truth is they had 2 games they absolutely should have won BC and Miss St. The rest of the game played out pretty close to how you would think.

Keep this in mind too, 3 freshman on the offensive line and multiple freshman on defense. The end result really isn't that bad, I would give a C.

Besides Etheridge and Greenard, maybe Staples, none of these guys make me giddy.

Brohm hasn’t proven he’s the next Bill Bellichick. We are making googoo eyes at him because he’s a former Cardinal and he did a good job this year at Purdue. CBP is winning. I don’t want to be one of those programs that chases winning coaches off because they didn’t win “big”- especially when they’ve never really won big in the past (aTm comes to mind). Recruiting looks like it’s getting better, and it looks like the staff is building depth and talent at every position. I’m still on board with Bobby.

I’m probably still on board with Bobby but the tolerance is less plus it’s obvious that we still have issues on the defensive side. If changes aren’t made then I don’t see much improvement for next year, especially losing LJ and a lot of bodies on defense.

Bobby won one more game than Jeff, despite having 10 x the talent.
Purdue was projected to win what 4 games, they won 7.

Petrino wasted 2 yrs of a Heisman winner and other talented players,
especially 2016.

You switch coaches, Brohm has the Cards in the 2016 playoffs or Orange bowl.
Brohm has the Cards in a BcS bowl this yr with that weak schedule.

UofL will be more A&M than Clemson with Petrino here.
Time for new blood.

I'm on board with OP giving CBP two more years. Buyouts for CBP and Brohm will be considerably less. We saw piss poor defense this year because we had NO defensive line play and Sheldon and DeAngelo weren't walking through the door. They spoiled us as both were recruited by Coach Strong. Grantham proved he's a really solid X and O guy but was a terrible recruiter and our terrible D Line recruiting from 2014-2017 caught up with us. They should be MUCH improved for 2018 as we'll finally have some size inside. The opponents game paln was too easy this year, run it inside against us. Hopefully, the beef eaters we've signed and hopefully one more JUCO DT that alone should make our defense better. If not, bring Holt here.

With Lamar Jackson as QB, 8-4 and a bowl loss was a big fat F in my book!

I'm going to give positional grades, then see what it averages out to:

OL: F-
RB: C-
WR: C+
TE: D
QB: B+
DL: D
LB: C+
DB: C-
P/K: B-

I guess C-.

2 unsupported, and unsupportable statements.
10x? Really?
You know that Brohm has the Cards in the playoffs last year and major bowl this year? How could you know that?
It is human nature to idealize the unknown. It’s what hope is built on. But please; Jeff may end up being a great coach, but the unknown is just that- unknown.

I agree about Lamar. But we need a coach that can recruit. All of the CFP teams are in the top 10 in recruiting. When you're annually recruiting in the 20's and 30's a coaching change will not help. The best we can hope for is 8-4 or 9-3 seasons.

Georgia always recruits well, but Richt wasn't dedicated to winning big. Kirby is hungry and he's taken the recruiting/coaching to another level. We need to take our recruiting to another level.

Yes, if you were expecting a 10, 11 or 12 win season. Since 2006, we have won 12 games twice, 11 games once, 9 games twice and 8 games (including this year) twice. The rest of those years we won less. I think it’s easy to say that since we had the best player in college football, the team should have been drastically better. Just shows that football is indeed a team sport.

Glad to have Bobby but anyone on here that refuses to acknowledge the incredible job that Jeff Brohm did this year at Purdue,(9-39 the last 4 years) plus the 3 years of success he had at WKU is purposely being an a-hole or is just, plain dumb.

We are in a win-win position if the “Powers That Be” have our best interests at heart.
