What a wild, weird season. Came out of the gate hot as fire, the points, the highlights, the buzz, etc. Even in loss to Clemson, the national respect was there. It seemed like everyone wanted UofL to be the "it" team. Then some eye raising performances against "lesser" teams. Grind out the Duke win, the late game winner at UVA, Wake held its ground for 3 quarters, all the while blowing out NCST and BC during the same stretch. Then Houston, a complete meltdown. An inexplicable meltdown, actually. During Petrino's first tenure, he had a few games where everyone was like "what happened?" USF in '05 and Memphis in '03 come to mind. Maybe that happens everywhere, a good team rolls along, then suddenly, out of nowhere, just totally craps their pants. It's becoming, sadly, Petrino's M.O. here. I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but I see a pattern.
Getting back to "lesser" teams, on came UK. To their credit, they saw something on tape and executed nearly to perfection. I've been to 3 UK home games this season. In each one, almost 2-3 times a game they threw deep. Mostly, the passes went to Badet, who dropped them more than he caught them, it seemed. Some how, some way, Grantham chose to ignore that aspect of UK's offense. Look, the team flirted with disaster often against teams they should have soundly beaten. This time, it bit them on the ass.
The 21 fumbles lost- yeah, that's an embarrassment. As are the penalties.
I believe Lamar is still a lock for the Heisman. Both Tebow and RGIII had three losses when they won it. Tebow won it with the same TD count as Lamar (51), but Lamar has nearly 1,000 total more yards than Tebow did. There are guys in the running who still have an opportunity to make their case this weekend, prior to the 12/5 deadline for ballots to be submitted. It would take a hell of a showing by Hurts, Watson, Westbrook, Mayfield, etc., but I doubt they overtake Lamar. His lead, according to the Heisman Watch, is substantial.
