Emoni Bates To Eastern Michigan

who the f saw that one coming? i guess he originally committed to Izzo so likes MI area

I’m okay with this. Was a little uncomfortable with all the drama/suspense surrounding his commitment anyways. Don’t get me wrong, I would been very interested in seeing what he could do in a Cardinal uniform, but was also apprehensive about what his presence could do to a cohesive team environment as well.

It looks like his crew is completely messing this entire process up which may end up derailing the kid.

Memphis didn’t go well by any accounts. His recruitment screams of a parent being way to involved and not trusting anyone that he couldn’t control. His vision of his son maybe different than reality.

I feel very good about Payne’s plan. By passing on a player that would clearly fill a need means he has a plan and will not divert from it. Now he has to execute that plan which will become more clear in 2023. This year is a little concerning with the lack of guards but we shall see.

I'm not sure with what we have that I would classify our roster as a cohesive team environment. Its more like makeshift.

The No. 1 player in 247Sports' transfer portal player rankings is off the board. Emoni Bates committed to Eastern Michigan over his five other finalists: Michigan, Arkansas, Seton Hall, DePaul and Louisville, according to Joe Tipton of On3 Sports. Bates and Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter (who committed to Texas) were the only five-star transfers in the rankings.

We need dudes, the guy is a talented, Kenny Payne could have benched him or sent him home if he was a problem. I'd rather have him than not, but it's a not, so maybe we avoided a locker room problem here.

That’s funny he must not be confident about his ability to play with the big boys.

I won't link the article but the one I read says that he was all in on Louisville but the Louisville staffed cooled on him, backed off a little, and then backed off completely. KP knows we need dudes especially at guard, so I don't take that lightly. I trust the man who won those games.

What I saw out of Emoni Bates last season at Memphis, you guys didn't lose anything. There were those saying that he was the best high school prospect since LeBron James. What he is. He's the most overrated player I've ever seen & I've been following high school recruiting since 1975. I've heard that him & his dad are a cancer to whatever team that Emoni's on. When you're such a problem child that Memphis, of all programs, Memphis ran him off. You guys dodged a bullet.

From what I'm reading, he didn't commit to EMU over other finalist programs. All those other programs backed away, some a long time ago, and EMU was his only option left. All of the big time programs heard rumors about his Dad and wanted nothing to do with it.

He should have gone to UK last year and not played, like Sharpe.

glad Emoni thing is over. His transfer process was too long. very indecisive and felt like he was always shopping around for the better offer.

from jsut a fan standpoint i was hoping we'd get him for his pure talent alone, and was disappointed we did not, but going to EMU i thought they paid more, but reading Parrish's article below seems more the complete fault of his dad having way to much influence with sights on $$$ and not developing his son which leads to less $$$. sometimes parents are their kids worst enemy.

In October 2019, at the age of 15, Emoni Bates was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Born
For
This

Those were the words beside Bates' face. Underneath his chin, it read "Magic, Michael, LeBron ... And the 15-year-old Who's Next in Line." In the second paragraph of the accompanying story, written by Michael Rosenberg, a college assistant called Bates "the best player I've ever seen."
In June 2022, at the age of 18, Emoni Bates announced a commitment to Eastern Michigan, where he'll try to bounce back from arguably the most disappointing season any college player just had. So that should tell you all you need to know about how the past three years have unfolded for the one-time prodigy who has turned into a player basically no relevant program wanted to bring to campus this summer.
It's a sad deal.
Less than a year ago, Bates was ranked as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2022. Then, he reclassified to the Class of 2021 -- where he was still ranked in the top five alongside the players who just went 1st (Paolo Bancher), 2nd (Chet Holmgren) and 7th (Shaedon Sharpe) in the 2021 NBA Draft -- and was subsequently wooed to Memphis by Penny Hardaway. Less than a year later, the same Penny Hardaway reportedly told Emoni Bates his one season at Memphis would be his only season at Memphis. And though Wednesday's commitment to his hometown school has been portrayed by some as a feel-good story, truth is, it's only a story because Bates' options dwindled in recent weeks.

Memphis didn't want him. Louisville didn't want him. Michigan didn't want him.
So Bates -- who said earlier this offseason that his "main goal" was to go to a place where he could win -- announced a commitment to Eastern Michigan, which is actually a place that hasn't had a winning record since 2018. The Eagles went 10-21 last season and finished 316th at KenPom.com. They haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 1998. They're currently 262nd in BartTorvik.com's preseason rankings.
Good luck on that winning.
That is not meant as a shot at Eastern Michigan, by the way. I only type these things to illustrate just how off the rails Bates' career has gone since that Sports Illustrated cover. It should trigger a real look-in-the-mirror moment for Bates and everybody who has played a role in his fall from there to here -- most notably his father, Elgin Bates, who is among the reasons relevant programs largely stayed away this summer.
I'm sure Elgin Bates loves his son. I'm certain being the father of "the next big thing" is challenging. (Heck, being a father, period, is challenging.) But with those disclaimers out of the way, it's impossible to refute the idea that just about every decision Elgin Bates has made for Emoni Bates over the past three years, and his desire to be too involved at every turn, has contributed to this downfall.

Pulling him out of his high school and building a prep school around him was a mistake. Building a grassroots program around him was also a mistake. I assume it was profitable on some level -- but it was still a mistake on most levels because it led to Bates spending multiple years in high school with subpar coaching while surrounded by grossly inferior talent. There was nobody to push him on the court or off. So his development just ... stopped. And rather than recognize this and adjust, Elgin Bates, not long after name, image and likeness rights became a reality for college players, decided to have his 17-year-old son reclassify, enter college early and cash-in.
It. Was. A. Mistake.
It was clear almost immediately that Emoni Bates was not ready for college basketball. He began the season as a starter, but saw his minutes get slashed after he combined to go 5 of 23 from the field in consecutive games against Ole Miss, Murray State and Alabama. He only played 15 minutes against the Crimson Tide and was benched for nearly the entire second half. In a related note, Memphis won that game to snap a four-game losing streak, at which point it became clear the Tigers were better without him.
A little more than a month later, Bates left the team and returned home to Michigan because of what was described as a "back issue." Worth noting: he played 22 minutes days before he developed a "back issue," and literally nobody ever mentioned that Bates was dealing with a "back issue" until after he left the team with a "back issue." Also worth noting: I can't think of many examples of players developing back issues (or any other kind of issues) and flying home to see a doctor rather than just, you know, seeing the team doctor or some local doctors.

Regardless, that's what Bates did before rejoining Memphis more than a month later under, let's just say, weird circumstances. He played three minutes against Boise State in the NCAA Tournament and 12 more against Gonzaga. Then he entered the transfer portal. And now he's headed to Eastern Michigan, where he will once again be surrounded by grossly inferior talent.
I hope it works out.
But I have for a while now believed that the best thing for Emoni Bates would have been to join the G-League Ignite or enroll at a school with other NBA prospects. He needs a strong coach who could convince Elgin Bates to detach, stay away and let his son be pushed and coached without interruption or input. Problem is, most high-major coaches have heard stories about Elgin Bates causing scenes inside FedExForum at Memphis home games and generally being a pain in the ass for Hardaway, so they largely didn't want to get involved.
That left Eastern Michigan as one of the few options available. But going back home to be a part of a program where everything will revolve completely around him feels a lot like the mistakes that were made when a prep school and grassroots program were built to revolve completely around him.

I hope I'm wrong.
Because, if I'm not wrong, and Bates does nothing at Eastern Michigan to rejuvenate his reputation and then exits his sophomore season as something less than a guaranteed first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, this will go down as one of the greatest falls from relevance in the history of the sport. That's not fun for anybody. So I'll be rooting for Emoni Bates to be awesome and the MAC Player of the Year.
But the fact that it's even possible to root for such a thing highlights just how badly things have gone since Sports Illustrated put him on the cover in October 2019, back when he was supposed to be the next Kevin Durant and it was was literally impossible to envision ever writing about how Emoni Bates would need a bounce-back sophomore season to maybe be the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year.

A few of the national writers have been on radio sine yesterday all stating that in the beginning he was a U of L lean. However KP informed him and his father that he was not having him around the program or any other entourages. Either focus on being better or this place was not for him. So U of L and alll the other major p5 pretty much stopped recruiting him. He had no choice but EMU.

the amount of money in the NBA is so absurd. Lebron is a billionaire. Devin Booker is getting $224 million for 4 years.

so i definitely understand the pressure on Emoni, especially with his dad helicoptering above him.

I wish the young man good luck, but he definitely missed out on a great opportunity here. Nothing wrong with going to play in your hometown at a school where you’re guaranteed to get all of the minutes you want.

Ultimately, it seems that guaranteed playing time (and possibly NIL $) was what this was about. And the reason for UofL cooling on a requirement of guaranteed playing time for Bates coincides with nearly everyone saying that DJ Wagner will be signing with UofL.

Bates was going to play this up coming season .DJ would had no bearing on him .

I wanna hear how players are doing in workouts. Hopefully Kp will talk about it in tomorrow’s interview

hope we hear about the players workouts also... my expectations are low. only 2 guards on the roster. that is not going to work out.

also, i think too many people are counting on Wagner to come to UofL. he is dragging his feet like Bates.

My understanding is that Bates didn't drag his feet, we (along with every other major program) rejected him because of his Daddy issues.
