Monday, citing the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, that deputies in Superior Charter Township, Michigan, pulled Bates over Sunday night after he did not stop at an intersection.

A firearm was discovered during a search and authorities took Bates into custody, the sheriff's office said, according to WXYZ Channel 7.

Court records obtained by WXYZ Channel 7 show that Bates is charged with two felonies — carrying a concealed weapon and altering ID marks on a weapon.

But KP was wrong for backing off him LOL! This kid is nothing but a head case sad because he is another waste of pure talent that was ruined by his parent greed and control.

my first thought as soon as i read was how much more respect i now have for CKP. it takes courage to pass on talent. but at the same time, to play devil's advocate, it saddens me to think EB has talent but he doesn't have a good framework around him to make him succeed. every person is different and every person needs a different kind of support, some need the hard facts and a military style regimen, others need more nuanced emotional support, or simply positive encouragement. to me i don't anyone anyone has EB's best interests in mind and maybe CKP was the kind of coach he really needs but will never get.

going back a few years, remember Derrick Character? he had all the talent but he walked a different path and RP fed him negative comments in the press constantly but DC needed things done differently than what RP did and i think it backfired. I'm more happy CPK is building something, but for any person with talent, not becoming the best person you can because you simply were born in the wrong household is always a bummer. The most successful people generally have someone behind them supporting them in the best ways, EB certainly does not.
at least the good news for him is that if you understand quantum mechanics, we live in a multi-verse, so the reality is in some existence EB is the greatest NBA player ever and RP never cheated.

1. Who said Payne was wrong for backing off of Bates?
2. You don't have any firsthand knowledge about Bates regarding his situation with "parent greed and control" so anything that you're saying is pure conjecture.
3. I imagine Bates is one of many D1 athletes that if pulled over would be carrying a gun. This is America, and sadly, it's a gun culture.

ESPN reported the car was borrowed from a friend. The judge released him on OR so he must not have thought Bates to be a flight risk. Just a poor choice of friends.

OK, the Libertarian in me is about to come out, be warned -

His car was searched for not stopping at an intersection? What type of gestapo bullshit is this?!?!? Unless he was verbally berating the police or had the damn gun sitting in his lap when he was pulled over this is so wrong.

My guess is that they were targeting the owner of the car.

I got curious after your post and search it online. It states that if there’s no illegal activity visible and you aren’t suspected of DUI that they must ask your permission for the search. However you do not have to give your consent, and attorneys advise you to not give consent. The police may try to intimidate you by claiming that they can get a warrant, but warrants are not given out simply by asking for one.

so for everyone to know, it's your 4th, 5th, 6th and 14th amendment rights that you need to invoke. i've attached a pic of a wallet card so everyone can print and put in all of your vehicles or your wallet of course. this applies to vehicles and your person, but also know that if your vehicle has a bathroom inside and thus could be considered a home, then they need a warrant to search and it takes a lot to get a judge to sign a warrant and return in a reasonable amount of time before they have to let you go. i never understand how drug dealers can get busted in normal cars when if they simply drive a motor home it'll take a warrant to enter which is almost impossible. but they can see inside any car and say probable cause. finally, i find it surprising that anyone here would think the search of a car with a tall black person inside by the police would be somehow out of the norm. if you are you are not paying attention, this is what normal hardworking african americans go thru every single day as they leave their house. the black community lives in constant fear of the po-po. if bates was white, you never would have heard about this, they would have been let go even if the gun was sitting on the dashboard next to a pound of herb and three lines fo yayo while having a crack pipe in hand. but a black man simply has to be black to be harassed. because again, why were they searched? because they were black. no other explanation is needed. here's the wallet cards pic and link for everyone to share and print

btw, knowledge is power

you don't have to be a libertarian or have any affiliation to anything, you're just a good human asking why. and that's how things get corrected. it's the ones who thinks it's okay and status quo where the issues lie. so be proud to ask why, it's an admirable quality imho.

this is a criminal case so the prosecution has to show beyond a reasonable doubt that Emoni knew there was a concealed weapon in the car and that it was altered.
if it's Emoni's gun then he is screwed. but if the gun is his friend's, then it gets harder.

and with the wallet cards i believe the only things you have to say to any officer are...
am i under arrest?
what are the charges?
am i free to go?
i do not believe any other words have to be spoken

Steve Haney, the attorney representing Bates, told ESPN that the charges against Bates are expected to be dropped next week and that Bates is already in the process of being reinstated by Eastern Michigan.

Haney, according to ESPN, negotiated a plea deal in which Bates is expected to plead to one misdemeanor count of attempted illegal transportation of a weapon. That, charge, however, will be dismissed upon completion of a misdemeanor diversion program, Haney told ESPN.

Just because he was released doesn’t mean he was innocent they’re releasing all criminals now days even murderers.

A criminal is someone who is convicted.
Even then, many are WRONGLY CONVICTED.
Coach Payne was right to pass over Bates, however if you borrow someone's car who has a gun in it, are you really guilty of a crime ?

He’s guilty of constructive possession though which is viewed as a crime in many states.
He’s also guilty of being a dumb@$$. For one not stopping at the intersection, allowing the police to search the car, and for not asking his boy is there anything illegal in the car before taking it for a spin.

It’s a weird thing to ask someone who wouldn’t be in a lifestyle that would carry a gun. If your friend is the type of guy that has a gun especially with the serial number scratched off then it wouldn’t be stretch to ask him
