That is, an ongoing $hit show. Enjoy...
The Proffitt Report: Kenny Payne's "Titanic"
by Doug Proffitt.
U of L is once again searching for how to turn around what was once one of the legendary basketball teams in our country.
Over the years it's been constant turmoil and firings. Too many times, fired for scandal or major controversy.
In this case folks ...none of that applies to Kenny Payne. He got fired because he didn't win enough games, and the financial losses were mounting for the university.
Tuesday night the coach did NOT take any blame, instead saying the fans and other people bailed on him, not understanding that the turnaround effort he faced was like trying to save the "Titanic."
That was disappointing.
He's the leader, he's the one making $3.3M a year. The blame IS on him.
I was always cheering for Kenny Payne. Why not?
He's a true Louisville guy and I loved that he said said on day one that he knew he also carried a important mission for the black community. He believed the head coaching job could be one of unity.
After all in Louisville, we are still segregated in most of our churches , and our neighborhoods, but we come together in the YUM Center.
It didn't work. The YUM Center stayed nearly empty.
Kenny Payne leaves as a still beloved former championship Cardinal.
He could also be leaving with a hefty $6-8 million dollar payout on his 6 year contract.
It means U of L is back in the same boat.
After all, they are STILL paying the man Payne replaced, Chris Mack, $133,000.00 a MONTH until 2025. That's right. A MONTH, to finish his $4.8 million buyout.
The "Titanic" job now shifts, to someone else.
