Cunningham is much more effective with the slant routes

Might be simple geometry, but Malik seems to have much greater vision and timing on the slant routes than those vertical. Those deep routes he throws are high elevation and closer to being a “Hail Mary“; they might keep the safeties honest but represent more of a wasted down for an offense that needs every snap to provide some positive yardage.

Several observers noted that Ole Miss seemed to recognize our formations in advance as an indication of our play. I witnessed EKU on several occasions where it appeared they knew exactly where Malik was going before the ball was snapped.

I was saying that at the game last night. All we were doing early was either running or throwing a bomb, that was horrible play calling.

Oline is terrible. Amazing how bad they are with the number of college snaps they have had. Left tackle is the only spot that hasn’t had many reps. At this point you are what you are put in the younger guys. The older guys just aren’t getting it done.

Friday night is going to be a big night for this staff. The team needs to be ready to play.

The title of this thread should be revised to add the following “when faced with less pressure” or “when playing a FCS school”. I saw nothing that says he doesn’t still have an accuracy issue. Go Cards!

NCC: Maybe you should stick to creating your own threads, and avoid trying to revise others.

Neither Chris Redman, Stefan Lefors nor Teddy Bridgewater are walking through the door, and there is no evidence that we have anyone else on the current roster capable of throwing more accurately than Cunningham.

It does not matter who we play, this staff needs to call the plays that best fits the capabilities that our QB possesses, and eliminate those that reduce the probability of success.

Or maybe you should just come up with a better thread.. Nothing to do with Ragone, LeFors or whoever. It was just pointed out you made an observation while we were playing a lesser opponent. Fact. Move on and don’t be so touchy. I’m entitled to my opinion. You, by making the thread are subject to criticism. I didn’t call you any names…

Great, I can keep hoping for another LJ that will coming walking thru the door. 😅

We the fans have a big part Friday night too. I’m dreaming of some out of the gates play calling from CSS & team. Three games in 12 days is tough but….

I am not calling you any names, I am just responding to your exception to my thread, and I am contributing my own more responsible explanation for Cunningham’s performance.

Malik, and for that matter this UL football team’s roster, are “who and what they are”. Your assertion, that there is no difference between which passing routes fit Malik‘s abilities is contradictory to what we have seen this year. Clearly his accuracy on the slant routes is better than the vertical ones, a result I suspect is based on his field of vision.

I will move on, when you move on; as I too am entitled to my opinion.

Apparently you didn’t move on but will you accept the fact that his field of vision is based on the pass rush and that EKU was rushing 3 not 4 like Ole Miss and other teams will do.

NC: as I stated, I willl “move on” when you move on.

Obviously you missed my entire point about Cunningham and his “field of vision”. The difference between a 3 man and 4 man rush is only relevant when considering the routes his receivers are running and the timing he has in the pocket.

You must have been watching a different game against Ole Miss; as the one I watched showed a mix of 3 and 4 DL-men rushing from the Rebels. The one sack in the first half was a just 3 man rush where the DE (I believe he was the one transfer that Ole Miss brought in) went around our LT like he was standing in mud.

Again, my original point about slant routes, is that Malik has not been successful throwing the deep vertical routes, but has been more successful with those routes where is field of vision is widened and apparently sees the angles his receivers are crossing.

My comparison to Chris, Stefan and Teddy was intended to point out the vast differences in passing ability over Malik; he has never been as accurate as his predecessors, and regrettably I doubt we will ever see significant change.

Why waste your obvious knowledge on this board? You should apply for the OC? I also don’t need to be told what I watched and what I didn’t. Like they say, it’s not rocket science, comparing Malik to former U of L greats is pointless and really not fair to Malik.

I was at the game with 233 last night and his comments are spot on. Part of Malik's issues are a lack of receivers and the other part is that he has failed to improve his accuracy. And on that point I'm disappointed in CSS's coaching performance. We MUST be far more aggressive both offensively AND defensively Friday night or UCF will walk all over us.

GO CARDS!!!

The reason I am responding NC Card, is to illustrate why contributors like you need to be held accountable for ignorant posting. Did you not read or hear Malik and Satterfield acknowledging post game that Ole Miss dropping 8 in defensive coverage was a complete surprise to their game plan?

You may have had your TV on, but you obviously do not understand what you were watching. Next time listen to the post game analysis and the player and coach statements to tell you what you obviously could not understand. As you say, this is not rocket science.

Pretty sure the salient point isn’t what anyone on here did or didn’t see or, does or doesn’t understand. Nope - the salient point is why didn’t satterfield have contingency plans for defensive adjustments or, multiple schemes? The answer IMO, is that he runs what he runs and if it works - it works and if it doesn’t - it doesn’t. It’s why both ole piss and EKU’s defenses played like they had a guy in our offensive huddle. It also speaks to the ever widening belief that satterfield is in over his head at this level.

So is that what you do? Listen to the post game analysis and then repeat that on this message board? Thanks but no thanks. Anyone can repeat what the coach says only a few seem to know how to interpret it..

No NCCard, I was there at the game and that is what I witnessed firsthand. My admonition to you, is that if you wanted a more objective opinion, all you would need to do is listen to what the players and staff are saying. Yes it was on the postgame audio for you and others to hear, but that was only confirming what I saw watching the routes.

Not that Eric Crawford is any genius analysis, but his article about “second and long” was to some degree an extension of my original point, at least with respect to how ineffective the deep vertical routes have been.

I get this “back and forth“ with you has turned more confrontational than objective. I have to believe that you are a UL fan that hopes for the best outcome, and expressing your entitled opinion with the same disappointment that we all are experiencing is understandable. My position is clear, I do not blame Malik for his shortcomings as a passing QB, nor do I believe Satterfield has any other options at this time. Bottom line, I hope he and Satterfield stay with the routes that Malik is most comfortable with and ones he can execute.

Good observation. Gives the O Line better opportunity to protect.

It might be that Cunningham seems better at slants because it's a spot throw...it comes with a specific number of steps into the throwing motion and generally a blocking alley is schemed in for a throwing lane. I think he is spotty at throws over the middle because he simply doesn't see over the line.

CH: yes it is quite evident that Malik struggles seeing over the middle of the LOS ............ it further explains his comfort and improved accuracy on those slant routes. UCF game provided him with some much needed confidence.
