Cunningham and Smith

Looks like a different football team since Cunningham came in. Even the defense has started to play better.

Dare I say 'QB controversy'? If Cunningham can energize the entire team then Puma's time as the starting QB may be over.

Tonight was a total mess, culminating in a QB controversy. Pass was the one player I felt really good about coming out of the Bama game. Now we are back to a question mark. Kudos to Malik C.

No, you're back to not having a clue what defines the best offense and the right QB. Spare yourself more embarrassment by trying to critique it...

How many years of college football did you play? I’m guessing it’s 4 less than me. I think a QB controversy is not a good thing. If Petrino wants to go with Malik and run the read option, so be it. I hope we can confidently pick 1 guy and go with it. Feel free to add some coherent thoughts on the game Mr. Football.

Unlike you and our resident football experts, I know my limitations. I don't know what's right or wrong with U of L football anymore than you do. I just know stupid when I see it.

Carry on, it's comical...

What’s comical is your lack of self awareness. If you don’t like people giving their opinions on a football message board, perhaps you should stay away. This all the more comical considering it came from you...a guy with more posts than anyone on here. You just admitted you don’t know much about football so it’d be best if you don’t interrupt those of us that do.

Football is really simple. A team that can run the ball, stop the other team from running the ball, and don't screw themselves is going to consistently win or always be competitive. There are no coaching geniuses there are only coaches that are able to build their program that do these 3 things really well.

Louisville starting taking over the game when they started running the football, stopped turning the ball over and stopping their run. Cunningham was the guy to get that going.

The concern is Louisville isn't doing any of these 3 things consistently. Too small of a sample size but people have a right to be concerned.

What this game does show us poor preparation and a lackadaisical attitude by this team, starting with the QB. I still believe in Bobby but not his staff, save for Summers. Low energy (like Jeb Bush with similar results) will get you beat by anybody. I suppose I should be a bit more sanguine, Indiana State is my alma mater so I wanted them to be competitive for a half or so, but we looked like the Keystone cops tonight and we need massive improvement to be competitive in the ACC.

I don't know if they were prepared or how much the weather played a role in their play. That was a mess of night.

Can't like Bobby and hate all his assistants he hired them all. It is his program. It never ends well when a coach is told to get rid of assistants and bring in other guys.

My biggest concern with this staff is recruiting, especially on defense.

I don't have any problem with observations and ideas. That's not what you and others express.

You express knowledge of football and the confidence to come up with conclusions. You probably don't have the former or you'd be making your money in football. And your basis for the latter is nil or you'd be right more often.

So you end up babbling like a clown. This issue has nothing to do with a message board or free speech. That's just cover for your babbling.

And by "you", I'm not just talking about you personally. Anyone else this applies to, so be it...

I feel pretty confident in my ability to converse about football. Using your logic, Luke Hancock shouldn’t be on the radio forming basketball conclusions. You see, guys like him (and me) found that we can make good money in the business world without enduring the nomadic coaching lifestyle post playing career. Sorry you take intelligent football discussion as “babbling”. That probably says more about your football comprehension than the “you” that you speak of.

Zipp did you play or have you coached football? Just curious?
Nope. And that's why you don't see me acting like I know a lot, technically speaking. Where you see me taking the strongest positions are business and financial areas, which I know from firsthand experience.

Years of decision making practice, however, have taught me how to analyze others doing that. I'm always skeptical of experts, people who speak confidently about what's wrong about something. Not knowing someone's credentials here, all you can do is rely on limited experience.

The same people, for example, who were longing for Jeff Brohm are moving onto another solution or coaching option. With me, you don't get to be wrong about much and maintain your credibility--IF you had credibility to start with. Come to the mike, but not with so much confidence or you just look like an idiot...

So you're comparing yourself to Luke Hancock? You're obviously pretty accomplished in your sport, so you should have no issue letting us in on your identity. Feel free to PM me if necessary...

Only accomplished former college athletes in addition to those are currently working in the field can speak intelligently of said sport? Thanks for clearing that up. Any other qualifiers?

Just curious what positions those who played football played. I played these positions:

Middle linebacker and Strong Side Linebacker in 4-3-4 and Strong Safety when we switched to the nickle. On occasion I played cornerback, also.

I was the gunner on the punt and kickoff teams.

I also was a tailback and fullback on offense.

I played free safety. Loved being a gunner on punt coverage. Hated returning punts. Played running back when I first started football.

So many fans set in the stands and never know what is going on. They cannot tell when people or out of position, when they line up. Furthermore they cannot see when defense players are failing to stay home to on reverses or sweeps. I watch QBs roll out without the ball and nobody is with them. Today's players do not seem know that ball could be on the hip they cannot see. But you can damn well beat the opponents in the booth can. Most Louisville football fans are basketball wise and football dumb. And to sum it up is game that one or two mistakes will beat you unlike basketball.

HS TE

College was a DE/OLB on a what is now FCS team.

But I don't know anything today because I wouldn't know how to tackle either.

Or "crush" a QB without hurting him. :p

Different game? Yes

"Better" game? Not so much IMO

The defense last year was one of the worst I’ve ever seen in terms of knowing assignments and playing correct technique. Peter Sirmon fleeced the university.

Even as players, most of what we know was learned from coaches. Some people may have had great/good coaches (Schnellenberger/Bryant/Lombardi), some may have had poor/bad coaches (Cooper/Krags/Stoops)

So just because we played doesn't make us experts either.

And I will readily admit I could not coach today's players. Hell, I couldn't relate to them in the 80's :p

I was offered asked to walk on at Virginia Tech for football and had full scholarship offers at some small schools, I also had two track scholarship offers. However, it was 1968 and my draft number was 23. I joined the Navy reserve in 1968 and did two years active duty from November 1969 until November 1971. I am glad I did. National Security is more important than any football game.

so, Zipp's logic is...every player to ever have played HS or college football ends up coaching? Funny, my son-in-law, who was Mr. Football, despised the idea of coaching but he doesn't know near as much about football as Zipp who did not play. Illogical at best.
zipp's logic is the two don't go hand in hand. How great of a PLAYER was Rick Pitino? How great of a COACH was Lamar Thomas?

You earn your credibility in this space. You don't get it by default or have it assigned to you based on who you are. As expected, knuckles doesn't appear to be anywhere to close to the football equivalent of Luke Hancock anyway. Just another guy flapping his gums with very little credibility on the subject or track record to back it up...

Lol, I mean seriously...are you really this wound tight? I’ll try to earn your all important credibility....my life as a message board poster is so incomplete without it. It’s unfortunate that my non-illustrious college football career doesn’t qualify me to post on football topics on this board. Please Mr. Gatekeeper let each of us know who qualifies!!

In all seriousness, it would be best for the board if you offered some value to the discussions, otherwise you are just being boorish. I’m extending an olive branch!!!

"Value to the discussion?" You mean like recommendations to fire Petrino, revert back to a traditional offense, and hire Jeff Brohm?

If that's considered "value", thanks, I'll just observe and comment. Maybe chuckle a little.

BTW it's not MY credibility you're after. You need to try not to take stuff so personal...

Does Petrino have a presser tomorrow? Will be interesting to see if he sheds any light on the QB situation. I’d assume he takes the Saban approach and won’t divulge much. I’d expect Pass to start against WKU though.

He said on his show today given the conditions that a more mobile QB would be more effective. But he was very happy with Cunningham’s performance. Did not mention who the QB would be moving forward and Kent Taylor didn’t ask.

I'll go ahead and predict Bobby stays with Pass on a shorter leash.

My biggest concern with Cunningham is durability. He's fast, but not Lamar fast. He's gonna take some licks that Lamar probably avoided...

Sounds like both Pass and Malik Cunningham came away from the Indiana State game with injuries: Pass with a toe injury and Cunningham with an ankle. My guess would be that, whichever one is the closest to healthy this week will win the starting job, because I don't think there's a great deal of separation between the two.

BTW, did anybody happen to get a count of how many times Paul Rogers mistakenly called Malik Cunningham "Malik Jackson"?!! He said it so often that he had me wondering whether I had the wrong name for Malik....

I'm probably reading more into this than I should, but I like the fact that the 3rd string QB (Travis) was given a long pass play on his first play in a game.

I was reminded of Hunter Cantrell against Miami. Different outcome, different importance of game, but I liked it.

CBP has confidence in him. So I do too.

The kid sort of reminds me of Freshman Lamar Jackson.

I, honestly, think that Pass is THE starter and you could see some sets in certain games for Malik. I think his 20 yards and in game will be fine, but wonder about arm strength around the field beyond that from what I have seen/heard.

Agree ... from that standpoint, he reminds me more of Stefan LeFors than Lamar Jackson.
